The nightmare of rat!,
By Katie (Honolulu, HI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Third Grade Pet (Hardcover)
I like it because it is about a girl that takes a chance to get to know the rat. Before she gets to know the rat, she hates rat. But once she gets to know the rat, she starts to care about the rat. It is good thing that she takes time and the risk to learn more about the rat.

Engaging chapter book for ages 6-8,
This review is from: Third Grade Pet (Paperback)
My six-year-old loves reading chapter books with engaging storylines, and has especially enjoyed the Judy Moody series and the Ivy and Bean series. We came across this title at our local library and my daughter immediately picked it out. She was intrigued by the title "Third Grade Pet". Even though she is only in first grade, she flipped through the book and found it easy enough to read independently and we checked the book out.
She read the story to me over several nights and both of us found the story interesting. Rosemary who is in Mr. Wilder's third grade class does not care for rats, and is horrified when the class decides on a pet rat for the classroom. She is even more disturbed when Mr. Wilder chooses her and the class clown, Brian to take care of Cheese the rat. Gradually, Rosemary discovers that Cheese is not so bad after all, and is in fact, quite adorable. Now, Rosemary needs to save Cheese from Brian's clutches, and she goes to great lengths to keep Cheese safe, even if it means sneaking Cheese out of school! There are many exciting moments in this book that motivated my daughter to keep on reading when she came to the end of a particular chapter. The black and white illustrations keep kids interested in the story. After reading this title, we went back to the library to check out Judy Cox's other books!

Great, funny book,

This review is from: Third Grade Pet (Paperback)
I got it for my third grader based on the title, but this book is not challenging enough for third graders. Maybe a first grade reading level for this book.
Still, it is entertaining and funny, and promotes thoughtful behavior toward animals. There are some mild insults from child to child, but nothing vulgar. |
