Impressive overview of Asian influences on American art,
By
This review is from: The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860-1989 (Hardcover)
This massive and thoroughly researched collected volume covers the Asian influence on American art from the late 19th century to the present. The articles are serious and interesting and are profusely illustrated in b &w and color as well. I especially enjoyed the article on Abstract Expressionism, as it showed links between Japanese and Chinese art and the classics of Abstract Expressionism that have been repressed and denied, partly for political reasons. The book as a whole puts the various aspects of Asian influence (Zen, ukiyo-e, Buddhism) within a political and historical context, avoiding the idea of the "timeless East." As an appendix there are biographies and short bibliographies of the artists discussed, from Mary Cassatt and Jackson Pollack to Yoko Ono. There is also an extensive bibliography at the end. If you have any interest in the topic, this is clearly the book to have.

The Third Mind is a wonderful exploration of Asian influence on American artists. It touched on several areas I had not considered. It was a good read to prepare for viewing the exhibition. Great price.
