Book Description

I always get the math wrong.

Is the third time the charm?

Because I can think of three good reasons not to let Nick Sullivan back into my life.

FIRST, I got over my infatuation with him - cold turkey. So what did he have to offer anyway? Mystery? Adventure? A sexy grin and a killer sense of humor? All of the above, if I think about it. Which I don’t. Ever.

SECOND, he had the nerve to come back! After fifteen years, he shows up looking (better than ever) for a place to hide, with a story about being framed for murder. Only problem is, there’s no corpse. As if I’d fall for that old line...

THIRD, I’m now old enough to know better - and smart enough not to be seduced all over again by the warmth in his eyes. I should give him the boot. But it is murder. And he does need a place to stay. This time it’s strictly business. Nothing personal. Just harboring a fugitive. For old times’ sake. And just maybe to satisfy my own craving for a little adventure...

So what does that add up to? THIRD TIME LUCKY.

This edition includes excerpts from DOUBLE TROUBLE and ONCE UPON A KISS.

Editorial Reviews

"Do you feel lucky when you get more than you expect? If so, I strongly recommend this book. I rarely laugh out loud while reading, but this gave my smile muscles a good workout while engaging my brain. The writing is snappy and refreshing...This was my first Claire Cross [a.k.a Deborah Cooke] and I plan to pick her up again when I need a good laugh."
--All About Romance

"Funny, quirky, touching and romantic!"
--Suzanne Forster

"A cross between a Julia Roberts romp and an episode of Seinfeld!"
--The Romance Reader

"Laced with a good deal of humor. Ms. Cooke creates characters that will alternately have you laughing and sniffling. [She] makes the transition from writing historical romance to contemporary romance seamlessly and without apparent effort. Writing with a completely different style, [her] creative voice still shines through. I thoroughly enjoyed this emotional, riveting tale."

2.0 out of 5 stars Not At All Happy With This One! August 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I recently came across a free book "Double Trouble" and read the reviews. After reading the reviews, many suggested reading the Coxwell Series before beginning this one. The reviews of "Double Trouble" seemed favorable enough. I purchased the other 3 novels before beginning "Double Trouble". I'm beginning to think this was a mistake! I just finished reading Book #1 "Third Time Lucky'! It took me till almost 50% of the book to become interested. The beginning was painfully slow! Now to the part that really irritated me (besides the slow start), the ERRORS! The errors in this book were horrendous! I can't believe I paid $5.00 for a book riddled with errors! I am on Page 2 of "Double Trouble" and it already has omitted words and spelling errors! Oh, but shame on me...this is the FREE one! Hopefully, books #3 and #4 are better edited, that's if I ever read those books. Book #2 will be the deciding factor!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fans of Ms. Coss will like this book November 7, 2000
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Fifteen years ago he left Rosemount and his buddy overweight Philippa Coxwell behind. Only his beloved, but estranged grandmother Lucia "Dragon Lady" Sullivan could get Nicholas to return home. When she asks him to do so, he leaves behind his successful Seattle adventure travel company for New England. Nick arrives at Lucia's home only to see the gory corpse of his murdered grandmother. When Nick hears the siren, he flees the crime scene. Fifteen minutes later, Lucia rises, proud of her first act performance teaching her favorite grandson a lesson in life.

Nick turns to the only person in the area he trusts, his high school buddy Phil for legal advice. Phil always loved Nick. He is stunned to learn she never became a lawyer, but instead became a garden advisor. Unable to resist Nick, she accompanies him back to Lucia's home to find no body. Feeling he played her for a fool, an angry Phil tells him to leave. However, Nick realizes that he needs Phil for more than just moral support, but can he commit to her if he is lucky enough for her to allow him a third time in her life?

THIRD TIME LUCKY is a screwball comedic romance that stars several interesting charcaters. The convoluted, yet charming story line works because of the interrelations between the cast, especially Lucia's overriding influence and the brother of Nick's injurious behavior. Nick and Phil are an ideal couple even if he is a bonehead unable to see clearly that she is his love. Claire Cross writes a warm, witty, and often wild novel that shows the expanse of her talent.

2.0 out of 5 stars What Are Other Reviewers Reading? May 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am only about halfway through this book. Will update the review if I can force myself to finish it. I have two of the other books in the series on my Kindle but don't think I will even start them. This book is extremely boring. I cannot care about the characters. The plot jumps around. Parts of the story make no sense. I wish I had not wasted my time on it. I read a lot of books & am sure I chose this based on good reviews. I am usually picky about books I read as I want to enjoy each book I select. This is not on the level of Emily Griffin or Elin Hilderbrand. Don't waste your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Go Lucky! July 9, 2011
"Third Time Lucky" is Phil, short for Philippa, Coxwell's story. She's the only daughter in the Coxwell family and the only one so far who hasn't gone on to become a lawyer. She's the odd one out of her family and the only one who has followed her heart. Enter Nick Sullivan, who disappeared over 15 years ago and took Phil's heart with him. He doesn't know that and mistakenly thinks her heart beats for his brother Sean. He's come back at the behest of his grandmother Lucia, whom he finds murdered in her greenhouse. He panics and runs to the only person he knows will trust him, Phil.

I love how this book started off with a mystery and slowly unfurled to give glimpses of what had happened in the past. The past was very, very important in the development of this story. Not just with Nick and Phil, but also with Lucia, Nick, and Sean's story, as well as the little side stories of Elaine and Jeff and Phil's parents. I loved reading about Nick and Phil and how their love story developed. I am also now intrigued to read about the other Coxwell siblings and will definitely be picking them up to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite in The Coxwells series March 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Enjoyed the 'Who done it?' mystery element in this book. Will definitely look up more books by Deborah Cooke as I've enjoyed all of the books in 'The Coxwells' series. Glad they all could stand on their own as I read them out of sequence but it really didn't matter as there isn't enough cross over in the story lines to make a real difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful read June 21, 2007
Twice before, Nick has come into Phil's life and changed it for the better. Twice before, he's left without a word. Now he's back, asking for her help.

Nick has come back to his hometown in response to a summons from his domineering grandmother, only to find her lying in a pool of blood, a dagger in her neck. Fearing a frame-up, he turns to childhood friend Phil who, to his surprise, is not a lawyer.

However, when Phil investigates, there's no body, no blood, and she suspects Nick is trying to trick her.

Both Nick and Phil have family issues. Phil has, because of Nick's previous influence, broken away from the family expectation of becoming a lawyer, but her family still makes their demands felt. Nick has lived away from what remains of his family--his brother and his grandmother--for some years, but he still feels responsible for his brother.

Third Time Lucky is about taking control of your life, and finding love along the way. It's about family expectations and responsibilities. It's about trusting your heart and taking a risk.

Claire Cross is one of my favorite authors, and Third Time Lucky is one of the reasons. The characters are realistic, with real problems that they overcome during the book. The plot is a page-turning balance between screwball comedy and mystery. It made me laugh, brought tears to my eyes, and put me on the edge of my seat. Just a wonderful read.
