Product Description

Third Watch: The Complete First Season (DVD)

Amazon.com

Equal parts ER, Rescue Me, and Law & Order, Third Watch received critical raves when it premiered in 1999 on NBC. All 22 episodes from that first season are included in this 6-disc box set, and the episodes (many of which reflect political issues of the time) stand up well. The third watch refers to the 3 to 11 p.m. shift of firefighters, police officers and paramedics who risk their lives to keep New Yorkers safe. The show focuses on the lives of a handful of characters who are complicated, flawed, and charismatic. Kim Raver (24) shines as Kim, a paramedic who shares a strong bond with both her partner Bobby (Bobby Cannavale) as well as her ex-husband Jimmy (Eddie Cibrian), a firefighter with a predilection for gambling who clearly isn't over Kim. Created by John Wells (ER, The West Wing) and Edward Allen Bernero (Criminal Minds), Third Watch is well written and paces the storylines well. The episodes' endings reflect that not every case is easily solved and that there are unpleasant consequences involved in protecting the rights that many of us take for granted. None of the main characters are presented as over-the-top heroes, but rather as hardworking people doing the best they can. The show at times goes out of its way to depict how flawed some of them are, but the actors deftly draw the focus back to the bigger picture--how to protect people who seem intent on self-destruction. Through the first season, the characters will face addiction, heartbreak, and fear. The one thing that dates the show is the full frame presentation, which belies its era. The special features aren't particularly noteworthy--there's a blooper reel and a "making of" featurette, but no deleted scenes or audio commentary on any of the episodes. --Jae-Ha Kim

What on earth were they thinking of when they cancelled this show. Please, somebody with some common sense, get this program out on DVD! A Japanese website has Third Watch on DVD, Sets one and two. (...)I think this is the whole first season. Anyway, I'm going to order and see what I get. The rest of you can go to the website make up your own minds May 1, 2005.

I've watched THIRD WATCH since the beginning. It is well written, well acted & gives us all a sense of what it's like for the brave men and women who are police officers, fire fighters & ems/paramedics.

The shows I loved the most were the ones that paid tribute to all those who lost there lives on 9/11. Of all the shows based in New York, THIRD WATCH gave us all the best personal look inside that tragic event. They delayed there first episode that season in order to re-do the first episodes to reflect on the tragedy that changed our nation.

As I've read, the actors are close to their counter-parts who are consultants on the show. Their emotions were well represented and it was the finest tribute I saw from the television industry.

I am sorry to see the series end and will be waiting for the release of season 1 (and all subsequent seasons) on DVD.

Yes there are DVD sets available and since I was so anxious to own it I was willing to pay $140 for the set. Big mistake...the video quality was extremely poor, the beginning of commercial breaks played, and the TiVo information bar popped up on the screen intermittently. I requested refund information and they tried to convince me to keep the set at a reduced price. Several emails later I was given return information and the purchase price was credited back to my account. I called one of the "companies" offering the set. The phone was answered by a person after a semi-professional hold recording and it sounded as if I had awoken her and she wasn't very helpful. Needless to say I did not make the same mistake twice. I will wait, albeit impatiently, for a quality company like Amazon to offer the set.

Okay us loyal fans of Third Watch need to get on the ball and email NBC and bug as many people as we can to get this great show released on DVD. I see all of these other subpar shows that have barely been on a year released to box sets and it angers me! Lets speak out people! This show never got the recognition it deserved, it was never nominated for any awards and when it was canceled the network didnt make any fuss what-so-ever about it. So we weren't able to save the show but lets help it live on. I think this was the best show on Television with an outstanding ensamble cast, it will be greatly missed!

To have this series released on DVD - to me, this series is much better than "E.R." I've been a faithful fan since the very first episode in 1999 and it just keeps getting better. The different personalities of the characters in this changing ensemble cast seems to work rather well. You've got Sully, the veteran patrol cop, who is teamed up with young pup Davis (the son of his slain partner) Then, you have Yokas (who's trying her best to do triple duty as officer/wife and mother)paired up with Bosco (who never seems to know when to quit, much less when to keep his mouth shut or his ego in check.) Add to it your paramedics and firefighters: Doc (who seemed to make his work his life and ended up burned out,) Carlos (who seems to never change his self-centered personality,) Kim (who's on again/off again relationship with ex-hubby Jimmy Doherty gives plenty to talk about.) They're all out there, working the 3-12 shift and trying to do the right thing, on duty and off. Some of the cast members have come and gone throughtout the first 5 seasons, but it still remains a well-written show, as well as one that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

I can't believe that they cancelled Third Watch. I have been watching this program since the very first episode. It is one of the best TV dramas that has ever been on. I feel that I know all the characters personally, I would look forward to every episode on either Monday or Friday night. What is NBC thinking???? I think now all the Third Watch loyal fans, will stop watching NBC and continue to watch this series on A&E. By the way on EBAY under Third Watch, they have DVD for sale, but they are all from Britain, so I don't know if we can watch them over here. I hope that NBC comes to its senses and either puts Third Watch back on or puts out all of the episodes on DVD. I know that I would buy all the episodes, and reading all the other reviews other people would too. Besides reading these reviews on Amazon, where else can we write to make NBC realize what it has done.

It's now getting to the point where shows are coming out on DVD right after season 1 ends! Third Watch had 6 great and successful seasons, NBC treated it like the red headed step child and axed it. We used to be able to watch it on A&E but even they have felt the need to get rid of it (down to 3 episodes a week at hours most people can't see it). What a diaster! A quality show and it's not out!

The cast should be complaining! If the show is out on DVD they get more exposure for future projects! It's sad that everywhere else in the world can get the DVDs but we here in America can't! It was filmed in New York about the FDNY and NYPD! The real heroes that were portrayed in the show should be upset! It's a shame that we can't get this great show on DVD.

I don't care about the music rights, if the music was signed to use in the episode it should have to be released for the DVD rights as well. Instead it seems to me like a greedy shame that we can't get the show that we love on DVD.

I'm tired of ranting now. So I wonder how long it will take for Warner Brothers to get their heads out of their... alright not going to say that, but WAKE UP WE NEED THIS ON DVD!

When??
I don't know when this will be released, but I've seen on other message boards that the reason they are struggling to get it on DVD is due to copyright issues with the music they used. I'm sure at the time they used the music they weren't considering issues like that, but apparently getting... Read More
