Feinstein Rocks!!!!,
By
This review is from: Third Wish (Audio CD)
Originally posted on www.MaximumMetal.comFeinstein! One hears the name and starts to wonder if bands are running out of names to call themselves. However, this particular outfit is the brainchild of David "Rock" Feinstein former of The Rods and even further back "Elf" where he played the lead guitar. People might be interested in knowing that Rock Feinstein is also the Cousin of the legendary Ronnie James Dio. The CD kicks off with "Regeneration" and this is a power rocker of a tune. Solid double-bass throughout and a very Bruce Dickinson/Don Dokken-esque vocal line by John West. Without trying to draw too many comparisons on someone it is simply who he reminded me of at first listen. I don't think those two have done any vocal wrongs so it is not a bad thing to say of Johns vocal abilities. One of the main things that I liked about this CD was the fact that it brought me back to some of the glory and power that was 80's heavy metal, with its solid guitar riffing and steady double bass drums along with the power vocals. I felt myself in need to dig up some of my older CD's after listening to it. As I listened to it I felt the influences of Judas Priest and Dio in the music. Surely the group was inspired by some of the finest metal created. Feinstein's guitar wizardry is very impressive, and it should be as he has been involved in the industry for so many years. I really had a hard time defining my favorite numbers from this CD as I ended up liking and re-listening to so many songs. To take a stab at it I would have to say "Regeneration", "Streaming Star", and "Masquerade" are my most listened to tracks. There is even a slower number for fans who move towards that slow driving kind of piece, "Far Beyond". Instrumental fans will enjoy "Inferno" which is the closing number on the CD. Packaging wise it is a full color 12 pager that has some cool artwork inside and out as well as a few band shots. Most of the pictures are of Feinstein and John West, but there is a band group shot in the center. The booklet includes lyrics to all the tracks, which is always a plus in my book. I hate when we see a release with a simple fold out and no lyrics outlined. Joining "Rock" Feinstein and John West are Jeff Howell on Bass Guitar, Nate Horton on Drums and Bob Twining on Keyboards. Each one melding their talent into one enjoyable piece of music. The production of the CD is excellent also, as this is another of the Magic Circle Music bands which many people will recognize as Joey DeMaio of Manowars label. MCM is Joey seems to be taking a focused interest on the bands he is putting out there. His intervention almost guarantees that the record will not lose any of its heaviness in the production stages. MCM is under the SPV banner for this release. As far as tour plans for this band, I have checked with the record company and was told that right now the focus is on Europe and some festivals. They would like to come here and play, so let's keep our fingers crossed so we can see some new things. I recommend this for old school metal fans, or people who just are willing to give new music a shot. I was not disappointed so I would hope you will not be either. Track Listing: 1. Regeneration 2. Rebelution 3. Streaming Star 4. Third Wish 5. Rule The World 6. Masquerade 7. Far Beyond 8. Poison Ivy 9. Live To Ride, Ride To Live 10. Firefighter 11. Metal Blender on "High",
By
This review is from: Third Wish (Audio CD)
I have never heard of any of these guys...Then I went on a ski trip w/ a bunch a guys and John West was among them. I saw another dude w/ a Feinstien T-shirt and thought,"whotf is that?".Then I heard John sing and play accoustic guitar w/ four or five other guys and was really impressed. Still, I never suspected he was such a good metal vocalist, 'till my copy of this CD arrived. &%$# COOL!!! I can't wait to check out more of his stuff.About this disc: Holy crap....think of every great metal band you've ever heard and throw 'em all in a blender. What you get is a collection of great guitar riffs, excellent melodies, very diverse vocals,(John sounds like Jo lyn Turner one minute, Don Dokken the next, and at other times Bruce Dickinson...pretty cool sheeet. The percussion is very solid throughout. I'm not even through the whole disc yet and my fav is 3rd wish, but like other reviewers I suspect after heavy rotation that may change. Did I mention David Feinstein plays like a chameleon? This guy can jam...He can sound like whom ever he wants at will. If I had to say one guy he sounds like it would be Glen Tipton,( and you know that guy can jam...) Yeah, I'm glad I got this. RockOn

BEST CD of 2004,

This CD, reaffirms my faith in American Hard Rock / Metal. Of all the genres of CD's that I've heard in 2004, this still has to be one of my favorites. Excellent from start to finish, and that is a rarity in today's market! Rock Feinstein (Of Elf and the Rods fame, and Ronnie Dio's cousin) has done something VERY special here. This CD should be in EVERY music lover's collection. You WON'T be dissappointed!

This work by " Rock Feinstein" of The Rods fame is a good stand out metal album. Feinstein's guitar work is in top form here as is John West's unique vocals. Great vocals in fact, John is a great singer who can reach variousranges and he seems to be able to change his vocals upon will. It seems that there are three, and at the least 2 different singers on this release. Yet no its all John West, amazing ! Im not sure why we haven't heard more of him in rock / metal circles, because he just has that voice that no doubt is metal. This release could have easily been bigger if it had been released under a different band name. I mean how many people really recognize the name Feinstein and associate it with oh yeah thats the guitarist for that band The Rods, and hes good. The cost is high on this album and I could not really justify it so I did the download and am glad that I did. When I debuted it on our rock night session, it passed with flying colors with my bud who is a metal enthusiast and in the music business. In fact he had a big smile and was elated to hear something new to him that said I have to have it in my collection. It seems retro is the way to go !

WOW! WHAT A GREAT ALBUM! OUTSTANDING FROM START TO FINISH. ONE OF MY FAVORITES AND I STILL PLAY IT REGULARLY DESPITE THAT IT'S ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD NOW.AS EVERYBODY PROBABLY KNOWS DAVE FEINSTEIN IS RONNIE JAMES DIOS COUSIN AND WAS HIS GUITARIST IN THE BAND "ELF" AND DAVE ALSO WAS THE GUITARRIST IN "THE RODS" FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS WELL SO HIS ROCK N' ROLL PEDIGREE GOES BACK A WAYS.THE "FEINSTEIN" PROJECT WAS SORT OF A SUPERGROUP ENDEAVOR WITH THE SINGER BEING FROM THE BAND "ROYAL HUNT" I BELIEVE AND THE OTHER PLAYERS FROM VARIOUS GROUPS SO THIS WAS BASICALLY A STUDIO PROJECT ALTHOUGH THE BAND DID PLAY SOME FESTIVAL GIGS IN EUROPE FROM WHAT I'VE READ.WHAT A PITY AS THIS HAS SO FAR BEEN THE ONLY RELEASE FROM THIS OUTFIT AND I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM TOURING ON A CONSISTENT BASIS.HOW TO DESCRIBE THE MUSIC?SORT OF OLD SCHOOL METAL[PROBABLY THE BEST DIO ALBUM YOU'VE NEVER HEARD]PLAYED WITH A LOT OF ENERGY AND COMPETENTCY.GREAT PRODUCTION AND RECORDING TOO.MY FAVORITE TRACK IS "RULE THE WORLD" BUT EVERY SONG IS A KEEPER.HOW COME THESE GUYS DIDN'T PUT OUT A FOLLOWUP?IF YOU'RE A METAL OR HARD ROCK FAN THEN GET THIS...YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED....

The Best Metal Album of 2004,

Wow. this CD hasn't left my player in weeks. It is quite possibly the best metal CD of 2004.For lovers of the classic metal sound of Dio, Dio-era Sabbath, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Whitesnake and classic Scorpions, you will not only NOT be disappointed, you will be overjoyed as I was. This album is packed with class. The music is powerful, heavy, intelligent and beautiful. David "Rock" Feinstein is a fine guitar player with a terrific knack at writing catchy, heavy tunes where melody is the key. His style is primarily an older style of hard rock guitar playing, much more akin to Richie Blackmore than Yngwie Malmsteen. He plays for the song, not over and above it. John West, who I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago in New York city, has a rich, thick, clear voice, perfect for the songs on offer here. His range is excellent and his performance is the icing on the cake. The drumming, bass work and keyboards are stellar as well. Out of the 11 songs on the CD, which include the instrumental "Inferno", it is such a pleasure to have a terribly hard time picking my favorites, because the album is just so strong and complete, but here goes: "Regeneration" is the album opener and it is hard and fast and catchy with John West sounding at times like Klaus Meine, which is a total compliment. "Third Wish" is epic and Sabbath-esque, a totally complete song. "Masquerade" is brilliant, so catchy, so heavy with amazing vocals, and "Poison Ivy" is heavy and bluesy, a truly great song. The rest of the album is terrific as well with one exception, that being "Ride to Live, Live to Ride", which to me sounded like a filler tune. Feinstein has created a great album. True metal fans have been waiting for something like this for a long time. "Third Wish" is art. It is powerful and mighty music. I hope the band sticks around for many years creating more wonderful music like this. I wish I could give it six stars.

This disc has been in heavy rotation in my player since I got it. Classic metal sound & vocals. The vocalist has a good range and the riffs are headbanging. Any true 80s metal fan should enjoy this. The opening riff to Masquerade sounds just like one from a huge metal band...I'll let you figure it out.
