Biography

One of the most popular reggae bands in the world, Third World is also the most enduring. Jamaica's longest-running self-contained band (only The Wailers existed when Third World was formed in 1973), the group has not only been hailed as the "reggae ambassador" but is often credited as the first reggae act to incorporate funk, Philly soul, hip-hop, South African township music, and even… Read more in Amazon's Third World Store

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the greatest, March 3, 2007

I agree with the person two below me in that this album is one of the greatest of all time. The first three tracks flow so well together and are gapless continuous which keeps the mood going. this debut album definitely showed people third world's talented vocal harmonies. the reggae anthem "satta massagana" originally by the abyssinians, slavery days, and freedom song are probably my favorites although its hard to chose.

the vocals aren't the only thing going on in the tracks though. great instrumentation throughout the album with keyboard and flute solos, great drum and rythmn section solos, and of course guitar solos. third world is a reggae band influenced by some funk too as can be seen in the track cross reference. overall a must for any reggae fan. buy this now.

This album's so good, it's hard to believe it was recordered by the same group that started playing a 2nd hand disco later on... I guess, Cris Blackwell (Island Records) didn't pressure them hard enough in the years to follow...
