Book Description

Ava Delaney calls herself a hybrid - a living, breathing human who happens to have vampire poison running through her veins. The only thing greater than her thirst for human blood is her capacity for guilt. She does her best to avoid the human world, for everyone's sake.

When Ava accidentally enslaves a human while saving him from a vampire, she realises she has to look for help setting him free. Despite her misgivings, she expands her world but finds herself dragged into a possible vampire civil war. With the help of some new friends with ambiguous loyalties, she tries to find a way to keep her human, and herself, alive.

At approx. 45,000 words, Thirst is the first in a 6-book urban fantasy series. Now comes with preview chapters of Taunt (Ava Delaney #2).

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read: Old School Vampires with a Twist July 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'll admit it. I downloaded this book when it was a free read, but I purchased the next book in the series, Taunt, because I enjoyed Thirst so much. It's so much fun to read about "old school vampires" who have fangs and don't sparkle. The main character, Ava, is a troubled and flawed vampire hybrid who just wants to lead a "normal" human life. She comes from a dysfunctional family, something many of us can relate to, and tries very hard throughout both books to balance who and what she is, and still be a good person. I think Claire Farrell's work is a refreshing change from the typical vampire story that's out there. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars A cozy little bloodbath December 3, 2010
By Joseph
Format:Kindle Edition
Ava Delainey is not a vampire, she's a hybrid (a daywalker created when her pregnant mother was bitten by a vampire, like Blade). But one night she stumbles fully into the paranormal world of psychic enslavement, magic spells, and clan wars. And everyone wants a piece of her.

The novella is well-written with plenty of action and several interesting characters, but the story could use a bit more focus. Too often the characters stand around to recap what just happened and argue about what to do next.

Thirst ends on strong note. Ava has a dark and twisted future ahead of her. I think Thirst will read better in a compilation with its inevitable sequels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing! September 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a surprisingly good story that I read in only a few hours; the kind where, after I finished, I immediately jumped on Amazon to buy the sequel (and leave a review). Unlike so many paranormal books these days, this didn't have even a hint of the Twilight taint. Well done, Claire Farrell! Ava is a believable character with a good sense of humor and a few quirks that make her unique, plus she isn't always A) the damsel in distress, or B) the supernaturally strong/brilliant/beautiful/wonderful/insert-fabulous-attribute-here, non-human arse-kicking heroine that makes men quiver with lust and bad guys quail in fear. Instead, she's a nice blend of the two, and that makes her a whole lot more relatable to us sort-of-brave average-looking people. The story itself is fast-paced, going back to days of yore by putting an unromantic spin on the whole vampire thing. Speaking of romance, if you're looking for sex, you won't find it here. Nary a lip-lock is found, which is refreshing for this genre. I highly recommend giving the book a go, particularly since it's currently free on Kindle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A yummy, paranormal stewpot February 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A continually conflicted heroine, vampire civil war, and an obsession? make for great ingredients in this delicious stewpot of a paranormal tale. Farrell impressed me as a storyteller. The nonstop action and her main character grabbed my attention on the first page and never let me go. I'm now reading the second book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars good story, grim world January 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Claire Farrell writes a good story about a girl/woman, who is part vampire and part human. She lives in a lonely, grim and bitter world. She abhors her vampire nature and fights against the "thirst". Contact with humans stimulates the thirst, so she avoids them. She is disgusted with vampires.

Many creatures want her dead, others want to enslave her because she is a "day-walker".

Her only family member - her grandmother - tried to cure her and made her see herself as a monster. When she was a little girl, she was brought to "therapists" who tried to "beat" the evil out of her. Bad memories!

She has a few sympathizers, but they also have their own agenda's.

There are still many loose ends in the end of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars a half-breed with a thirst for blood September 21, 2013
By clarice
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ava Delaney looks like a normal girl. She lives in a small apartment by herself and sells stuff online. Some would say she's a hermit. But she would say she's avoiding humanity. It's best for her and for everyone else. Avoiding humans means keeping them safe. She isn't exactly human. She's a half breed. A species thought to be nonexistent. Part human. Part Vampire. Ava has a beating heart like other humans, but the thirst of a vamp. It's this reason that she is hiding out from humanity. She doesn't want to be a monster.

One night Ava encounters a human being toyed with by a vampire. She doesn't want any other vampire to know she exists, since she isn't supposed to, but she isn't about to let the human die either. By saving Carl, she unknowingly enslaves him to herself. He is not himself anymore. He wants to be with her constantly and "feels" her need for things such as blood. He is a willing sacrifice, so to say. She, however, is not willing to drink blood. Since Ava can live on human food, that is what she does. She has to figure out a way to send Carl back home before she loses control.
After fighting within herself, Ava calls the only person who might be able to help her: her grandmother. They were not on the best of terms due to how her grandmother raised her. She had tried everything to get the vampire side of Ava out of her, including exorcisms and beating. She wanted nothing more than for Ava to be a normal girl. And after all these years, that is what Ava really wants too. But to save Carl she is going to have to start embracing the vampire side to deal with the odds. Now she is on the grid for two very powerful vampires at odds with each other and they both want her.
