A much needed return to print, April 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Thirst of Satan: Poems of Fantasy and Terror (Paperback)
George Sterling was a major early 20th century American symbolist poet, forgotten now for the most part and very much underrated. The editors and publisher have done a great service in bringing him back into print. Some especially memorable poems include "A Wine of Wizardry," "To a Girl Dancing" and "To Science."
The selection is a bit one sided because it only includes Sterling's fantasy poems, but that is a minor criticism. The Virgil Finlay illustrations are an added bonus but they are more pulpish in style than the poems, and I found the cover to be a bit garish - it gives a false impression of the flavor of the poems.
But overall, a fine and important book.
