5.0 out of 5 stars The best medal given in Vietnam was a live man's smile., September 7, 1996

This review is from: Thirteen Hundred Sixty Nine (Paperback)
When the movie "Animal House" ends, certain of the characters are transported to the Vietnam war as medical evacuation pilots and aircrews flying helicopters. They continued to rebel against the system gone awry. The war, like the move and TV series "Mash", provided a setting which brought forth all human emotions. Helicopter medical evacuation rescue also brought forth the black humor needed to survive and to maintain some sense of sanity. The abused tormented the leaders with false coded messages which revealed the confusion of conflicting war rules. The abused children of war with college educations inserted clever humor into the inhumane environment of kill or be killed. "13 69" was the name given to a person in a body bag. It became a radio call trademark that there was no hurry to get there, the man was already dead. It also became the trademark and name of anyone who had to fight in such an unlucky environment. From flying jokes, to motorcycle riding pack movements while away from the war, the new Animal House fraternity manage to always get their pound of mental retribution to what are unspecting "Deans of War." Practical jokes while flying, while tormenting those who take themselves too serious, and just to keep alive are pervasive. On the otherhand, the brotherhood of saving others is a common core of daily life.
