4.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew not a bad series !!
This is a great Nancy Drew, but not the best. As reviews show Nancy Drew books may be old but are still being printed and are selling strong. The kids at my school lirbary race to see who gets to the Nancy Drew section first. I like Carolyn Keene because she doesn't write freaky mysteries, she writes ones that are real sounding and don't keep you up at night.

When a pearl is stolen from a local jeweler named Mr.Moto, Nacy Drew is asked to locate the item and bring it back. Her case leads her to Japan where she stays with relatives of Mr.Moto.

Nancy goes through perilous situations just to find the pearl. She disguises herself as a Tokyo girla and starts picking up clues. Will Nancy be able to solve the mystery or is it too complex?

The book was okay in it's own sense. But I think there should have been more to the story. Such as near the end where they find the thieves. The whole thing going on there should have been expalined more. It left me out in the dark a little. For some reason I just felt somthing was missing. Although the setting in Japan was quite interesting.

I reccomend this book to Nancy Drew fans because it is the last one of the original(this is not the original book though) series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite, July 13, 2006
This review is from: The Thirteenth Pearl (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 56) (Hardcover)
I love Nancy Drew. I've been a collector since an aunt started giving me two books in the series for every Christmas. Then I started buying them on my own - trying to get them all in order. The 13th Pearl is the last book in the original series, so it took me a little while to get all the way up to this one. You know how on the back of the yellow hardcover books it says something along the lines of "From the very first Secret of the Old Clock all the way to the haunting mystery of The Thirteenth Pearl, follow Nancy as...." etc.? I was so excited thinking that the 13th pearl had something to do with supernatural experiences or something along those lines and boy was I disappointed to find out that the 13th Pearl is not haunting at all! It's just a jewel heist! Good story, but quite a letdown when I thought it was going to be some great haunted house plot. Oh well, I'll just read "The Ghost of Blackwood Hall" or "The Haunted Bridge" to get my fill of hauntings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew and the Thirteenth Pearl, December 13, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Thirteenth Pearl (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 56) (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed the plot of Nancy Drew and the Thirteenth Pearl. I especially like the way Carolyn Keene had Nancy travel to Japan. I think it is interesting how Carolyn Keene gave us information on old Japanese customs. For example, it used to be a custom that a man would point his shoes towards the house showing that he owns the house. Everyone else, including the wife, would have to point their shoes away from the house. This shows that they are guests and do not belong there. Summary: When a priceless pearl necklace and the thirteenth pearl in another priceless necklace is stolen from Mr. Motos jewelry shop, Nancy Drew and two of her closest friends Bess and George set out to solve the mystery no matter how long it takes. When they travel to Japan, Nancy receives multiple messages all containing the mathematical equation 4+9=13.In the Japanese language the number four has a double meaning of death and the number nine has a double meaning of suffering in pain. Thirteen has no double meaning but Nancy believes the number thirteen to stand for the thirteenth pearl(death+suffering in pain=the thirteenth pearl).Nancy also receives a surprise visitor in her room in Japan who she believes to be Benny the Slippery One. Nancy and her friends suspect a well known jewel thief called Benny Capputi, also called Benny the Slippery One because he has committed a great many jewel thefts and has not been caught. Presented with an invitation to Mr. Moto's going-away party(it is actually a invitation from a trapped Mr. Moto in hopes that they will find him), they locate the thirteenth pearl only to trapped with Mr. Moto in the "borrowed" house of a well known employee of Worldwide Gems Inc.

I would give this book 3/5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ok..... not the best!, November 24, 2011
A Kid's Review

I read this in matter of a week. It wasn't the best ND book for sure. They really explained about "pearls" and it's history a little bit to much. But it was pretty interesting. The characters had a lot of unique personality's and ND of course uses clever sleuthing skills. I expected better for the last ND book in the original series, but it is a good read!

I can't really give you a review for this item as it was purchased for my Daughter

who started reading these books when she was about thirteen and didn't finish

collecting these books at that time.

And is now trying to put her unfinished collection together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mini education on pearls and Japan!, January 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Thirteenth Pearl (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 56) (Hardcover)
I am working my way through the first 56 Nancy Drew mysteries. I am buying them and reading them in no particular order. So far, this is one of my favorites. I learned so much about pearls and how they are made and I love the cultural information that was in the book about Japan and many of the customs. The cover art is beautiful I enjoyed the illustrations throughout the book as well. Ned is back and once again thrown in the path of danger helping Nancy solve a mystery that involves pearls, a trip to Japan, thieves, an underworld collection of cultists and a trip to the beauty parlor.
