Book Description

Blind Dates Are for Wimps!

At least, that’s what Adric Garrison thinks.
Can you blame him? Thanks to his sister and brother-in-law, Adric is about to embark on a year of month-long, chaperoned, blind dates. awkward.
He didn’t ask for it. But Adric still finds himself living what seems more like a bad TV reality show than a new life in Fairbury.
Once an ordinary (if prematurely gray and vertically challenged) guy, Adric is now Fairbury’s newest “most eligible bachelor,” and dreams of permanent bachelorhood loom on the horizon. Will he call it quits before the year is out, or will one of his “girls of the month” change his mind?

One man, twelve women, one happily ever after.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Winner! July 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
I was first drawn to the book for it's fresh storyline. I've never read a book like it! I knew the author is a Christian author so I wasn't afraid it would be a reality show in book form. As I started the book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. But by the 2nd visit, I was hooked. Mrs. Having has an exceptional gift for character description. As I read the book, I felt like I knew the characters for a long time. But what I loved most and was most surprised about was how this fictional book addressed so many areas of my own life. Each woman mirrored an aspect of myself (except one!). I found many of the same insecurities and challenges the women faced as once I too have faced or currently face. It convicted me to evaluate my own behaviors and choices in a new light.

As a wife of 12 years and a mother of soon to be 8 children, I find myself forgetting what it is like to be just me and not lose myself as mommy and wife. I saw a lot of myself in several of the lively women and my soul was renewed at the gentle reminder of what I was like before marriage and children. It was a well needed reminder to not take life to seriously, get back to what makes me, me and to truly live each moment.

It was an emotional roller coaster to read. Laughter, tears and suspense! The twist and turns of the story were thrilling. I was a little disappointed in Adric's ultimate choice, but quickly overcame that! I have read several other books by Mrs. Having. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique plot, still not sure what kept me reading August 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hmmmm.....This was just an odd book for me. It was hard for me to wrap my mind around the idea of a pastor (who is the brother-in-law) of the main character recommending that a series of 12 women come and live with the man in his home (chaperoned) for the purposes of deciding if they could get married. Would a pastor ever recommend something like this? I think it's an open invitation for someone to get hurt and it's just odd to consider that you could find 12 women in this day and age willing to do this and truly open up.

My biggest problem with the book was that it seemed the farther you read it became so far fetched that I wondered what type of women the author would come up with next. Through the course of the book the potential relationships someone of a different race, people with high paying professional careers and aspirations, someone in a wheelchair, someone with severe emotional problems. It was like every single trait a women could possibly have needed to be captured in one of the characters.

I didn't really like the "hero" in the story. Although the author tried to paint him with flaws I felt he came across as too perfect and the women too flawed. I wasn't convinced he was truly in love in the end and this didn't feel romantic to me.

On a positive note, I would like to say that the author did a good job of coming up with a topic that is original. I have never read a book like this. And although I'm not sure I would again, I think it is ultimately what kept me reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Characters and Fun Story July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an interesting idea for a novel, and one that seemed a bit odd at first. Honestly, my first thoughts were "Oh. How scandalous!" A single Christian man, looking for a wife, is set up by his pastor with a different woman for each month of the year. Each woman comes into his home and the couple invests the entire month into getting to know each other to see if there is potential for a future together.

The set up of the book includes copies of the women's dating profiles for the reader. The reader learns a lot about the women in those profiles and you'll find yourself rooting for some and hissing at others, even before they arrive on the scene. Though, the soft side of me wanted each woman to have some magic moment that might make her "the one". At times, I felt sorry for Adric, the main character, and for some of the women. Other times, I was excited that he had the opportunity to meet such neat ladies.

The characters in this novel are fresh and fun, and the plotline has some exciting twists. As an old married gal, I think this is a great story for a single lady to read. It's full of fun and practicality, and might even help to give some insight into looking for a husband.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting idea
I liked the different girls, but not sure I liked the idea. The concept is a little out there. Too many people not enough depth. Not my favorite, but I did like it.

More About the Author

Chautona Havig began her love affair with words as a very young child. An early reader, she spent most of her childhood devouring books at the speed of a paper grocery bag full each week during summer vacation. Blessed with a vivid imagination, she often escaped into worlds of her own creation.

When asked about her first attempts at writing a novel, Chautona said, "The summer I turned thirteen, I wrote the most insipid, pietistic, self-righteous pile of wasted paper that anyone has ever attempted to put on paper. Looking back, I guess it was a good reminder of what I don't want to write! Twenty years later, in 2001, I suddenly felt compelled to write, and I haven't stopped since."

With over a hundred books in various stages of editing or completion and three in print, Chautona doesn't see herself ever running out of ideas.

Chautona strives to write about average people with genuine problems, and how they strive to live their lives to the glory of God. Some of their methods are unconventional and their situations aren't pristine and free from the taint of sin in this world, but all care more about serving the Lord and each other than obtaining some Utopian ideal.
