Book Description

0415060273 978-0415060271 July 21, 2002 Reissue
The period 1618-1648 was one of the most complex in European history. Religion interacted with rebellion and dynastic rivalry in a series of conflicts in central Europe known collectively as the Thirty Years War. This book guides the reader through the period by surveying the narrative of events and establishing the essential chronological framework. In addition Stephen Lee looks at such key issues as the motives of the participants, their gains and losses, as well as at the religious, military, social and economic aspects of the War. Each section in the book incorporates the most recent research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Major trama for Germany, turning point in history, October 18, 2011

This review is from: The Thirty Years War (Lancaster Pamphlets) (Paperback)
The Thirty Years War resulted in an agreement that each province's religion would be that of its ruler. Germany was fractured into small provinces and half the males died. Most European states were drawn into the conflict to replace those who quit the fight. In some towns two-thirds of the people died from the battles and starvation. The balance of power in Europe was altered and never again would religious differences help create such a devastation. Europe would not see another transformation until Napoleon and ultimately the 1919 peace treaty ending WWI.

This book gives many more details than books which have a larger theme and for which the Thirty Years War was just an episode. You'll find more in this small booklet and you will be fascinated by the action and intrigue. What a movie this could be!!!

The current price seems way out of line. I would estimate its value at about $10.

For a broader historical discussion of the underlying conflicts that were brought to a head in this war, "Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Rise of Nations" and "Europe and the Wars of Religion" are really thorough.
