5.0 out of 5 stars This Is The Alaskan Malamute - Review, April 6, 2010

This review is from: This Is the Alaskan Malamute (Hardcover)
This book, 'This is the Alaskan Malamute', along with the book entitled 'The New Complete Alaskan Malamute' (also 'The Complete Alaskan Malamute' which was prior to the 'New' re-write) are the two best books published regarding the breed. Both of these books were published in the mid 70's, and contain very good and accurate information during the initial AKC recognition of the breed, mainly because a lot of the significant early breeders were still active at the time.

Although this book is a real gem, I do find it a bit unusual to find pictures of what appears to be a couple of Siberian Huskies on page 10, 178, 182, 280 and 374 being passed off as Malamutes. It appeared to be a photo-op for the author's friends who owned these two dogs, as they really do not typify the malamute breed. The eyes on these two dogs appear to be blue and their face markings (or masks) with the high white foreheads are typically a Siberian Husky trait. Someone may be able to argue this point and say you can't determine the the color of the eyes from black and white photos, and the high white forehead mask doesn't rule it out as whether or not it is a malamute; but I defy you to find another picture in this book of another Malamute with the same 'spooky' eyes, and typically, Malamutes don't have high white forehead masks (and yes, I said 'typically' because I've even owned one back in the late 50's and early 60's, although with definite brown eyes). In any event, even if these two dogs really are Malamutes, the author could have left these misleading photos out of this otherwise very informative book.

This book is easy to read, as would be expected from a well published author (who also wrote several other 'this is the' BREED books. eg: Siberian Husky, Skye Terrier, St. Bernard, Afghan Hound, etc.). I found this book to be historically correct (except for the authors photo-op for her friends dogs) and informatively accurate.

This is definitely a book you will want to have if you want to know about the Alaskan Malamute or are thinking of living with one (or two, or three).

If you are interested in how the breed came to be and the early bloodlines, this is a great book. Fascinating read for the serious Malamute enthusiast.
