Biography

Danish indie-band, turned pop. Their energetic and upbeat songs have captured the heart of many different nationalities and they continue spreading good times with their more than apt live perfomances.

They started out in small town Silkeborg as the indie band Sodastar, later after incorporating Ramus Nagel and Stine Bramsen they went on to win the "Danish championship in Rock 2004".

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk

It’s difficult not to like Danish six-piece Alphabeat. Their retro-fuelled ‘wonky pop’ is pure optimistic fun of the kind that only po-faced too-cool-for-schoolers could possibly diss. This Is Alphabeat is a version of their platinum-selling Danish release minus some of the cheesier moments and with three brand new tracks produced by Mike Spencer (Kylie, Beverley Knight, Jamiroquai). 80s-style pop is still very much the motto here, with singles like "Fascination" and "10,000 Nights" manifesting more than just a casual aura of fame school about them. "Boyfriend" is reminiscent of 80s Madonna and the skewed electro of "Touch Me Touching You" is ridiculously saccharine and highly infectious. One of Spencer’s additions is worth noting--a cheerful romp through PiL's "Public Image," chirpy whistling and all, that will undoubtedly make John Lydon purple with rage. This Is Alphabeat packs in the musical clichés for sure, but there’s no denying the band’s zest and sincerity. At only ten tracks, this is a short but defiantly sweet statement.--Danny McKenna

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the 80s all over again..., August 30, 2008
By
This review is from: This Is Alphabeat (Audio CD)
Alphabeat are a Danish group whose style of retro fun Pop sing-along music reminds me of Scissor Sisters, or The B-52s, especially on the Pop/Disco opening cut "Fantastic 6" with nonsensical lyrics even referencing that dreadful 80s movie "Seven from heaven".

At just 10 tracks (totalling under 37 minutes), the CD cuts right to the chase, they can't afford to slip up on any track and they don't. The bouncy Motown-ish "Fascination" (it does remind me of Bowie's "Modern love") was a UK top 10 hit.

All the songs sound so sunny and are incredibly catchy; "10,000 nights", the brilliant disco-tinged "Boyfriend" (the best song Madonna never made in the 80s), the similar groovy "Go go", the piano tinged Scissor Sister-channelling "What is happening", the shimmery synth driven "Touching me touching you" (very Human League), to the sombre synth ballad "Rubberboots" (very Pet Shop Boys).

Opening with a whistle is a rousing version of PIL's "Public image", and closing is the stripped ballad "Nothing but my baby".

Like I stated in my title, it's the 80s all over again, and I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be Fascinated., November 16, 2010

If happy, upbeat, and cheerful music isn't your thing then prepare yourself to be converted, cause thats just how good Alphabeat is. This group has completely captivated me and my friends and I couldn't suggest purchasing this album more. Priced at an average $15 range, its a steal and I would venture to say you won't regret it. If you're not familiar with their songs try looking them up on Facebook, YouTube, or Grooveshark before committing to buying the album.

This CD is definitely 80s inspired and has super fun and upbeat tracks mixed with some sappy love songs that are sure to get your heart throbbing. Trying to compare this group to another artist is a bit difficult since they really are their own voice. I strongly recommend purchasing this album as they are unlike any group right now in the USA. If I had to sum this album up in one word it would be "HAPPY" and we all know thats not a bad thing right?

...now if only I could get all these songs out of my head. Especially "Boyfriend" which is super catchy. Totally 80s, but totally now. I would recommend this for anyone who just loves pop music and is ready to be put in a good mood!
