This review is from: This Is Ann Peebles (Audio CD)
Memphis sound soul diva Ann Peebles was one of the finest examples of southern soul singers to grace the airways in the late 60's and 70's.
Unfortunately, the advent of disco and a failed label has relegated her into that vast underappreciated relative unknown mire of lost, or as I like to say, misplaced artists. And a huge mistake that is! This woman could hold her own with the best of them and blow the doors off the rest. Her debut in 1969 at the tender age of 21 was, and still is, a wonderful foray into that hot, smoky world of R&B soul struttin'. A joy to listen to. Granted this release only garnered a couple of minor hits. This in an era when singles spelled life or death to an artist! Listen to "Walk Away" and tell me there isn't more soul in her phrasing than anyone else of her era. Same applies to "Won't You Try Me." The only misstep made on this release are the attempts to take on Aretha Franklin covers. With this particular release (import) you get 5 bonus tracks. I truly feel had these been used in the original realease instead of the "Franklin" covers this would have, and should have, been a masterpiece.... |
