End-Times Remixed, January 27, 2009

What comes to mind when you think of `the end-times' or `the return of Jesus'? For some, this is a boring subject. For others, it literally defines their lives. For many, ideas about `eschatology' (a five-dollar word for `the study of the end') fuel their passion and faith in God; for still many others, those same teachings have caused untold pain.
From the 1970s - 90s, books about `the end of the world as we know it' became best-sellers that fueled entire cottage industries. But as the first decade of the 21st century seems to mirror more & more a real-life apocalypse now, Christians are questioning their inherited assumptions. At the same time, people of goodwill from all faith backgrounds (or none at all) are questioning the public good of `Left Behind' spirituality. Environmental carelessness, turmoil in the Middle East, and a general attitude of war = end-times progress and peace = the antichrist have caused many journalists, theologians, ministers and ordinary believers to weigh the fruit of these popular ideas. They've been weighed and found wanting.
Thankfully there are other resources for faith and practice besides pop-culture interpretations of Revelation! Inquirers have been seeking out Scripture and church history with fresh urgency, to see just what Jesus and his earliest followers taught about `the time of the end' and Jesus' return.
Kevin Beck of Presence International has written a book exploring just these questions. In its pages no dogma remains unwalked; no sacred cow remains un-tipped in his exploration of a better way to tell this Story. Whether you see eye-to-eye with every jot-and-tittle is irrelevant; This Book Will Change Your World lives up to its promise, and its ideas deserve to be considered by a wide variety of readers.

Well! Did this book change my world? Maybe. Much of the "bible story" this book speaks of, is already familiar to me. Pieces of it seem a bit alien to my traditional ways of thinking, and some of the ending feels a bit strange to my former thought process (I won't give it away though).
But honestly, I really enjoyed the way the whole book was written and presented. It was theological enough to be good, but not too theological as to become too academic or weighty in it's subject matter. It was written in a very easy, readable and sometimes light hearted manner. Written more as a story than a theological discussion, I think this book could do much in the way of opening these topics to an entry-level and much broader group of people who might not be interested in, or able to handle the deeper exegesis of Scripture that some books give us (that is for those of us who do thoroughly enjoy that type too).
The bulk of the bulk does deal with the story of eschatology, and how it effects the story of the Bible and our living within that story. The very simple circle charts are affective in the points being made, and are great for visual learners to appreciate. The frequent humorous quips keep the book moving and again add to the story to make it a bit less of an arduous task to grasp and follow the thought process.
The last chapter, entitled "So What?" was probably the most challenging, as it explains how the new viewing of the story should change our way of living, with love being the biggest end goal.
When you start seeing prophecy as fulfilled, everything begins to look different. How do you make sense of what you are seeing? This can be a real challenge, and one that Presence takes very serious. Reading the Biblical story can very fulfilling in itself. It's been a great comfort to me to discover there's a coherent narrative running from Genesis through Revelation. One person puts it like this: "Presence has given me a picture that matches the puzzle pieces inside the box!"
I believe that this one act of rereading the Bible can make all the difference in the world. It can be the launching pad for rereading our lives, relationships, and world."
I've experienced the difference it makes in my life and witnessed the renewal it makes in the lives of others. The simple act of rereading the Bible is an act of creation that compels comprehensive change. (Pg 111)
