Book Description

How do you keep living when your best friend is brutally murdered and the love of your life may be responsible?

Simone, Stacey, and Talise are best friends navigating through life. During their journey, they brush shoulders with entertainment’s elite and experience great successes.

Simone lives an extravagant lifestyle, which some may say has come to her easily. Non-trusting of men, she remains guarded to protect herself. Star NBA player, Deon Bradford – a good guy looking for a woman to love him for the man he is and not his notoriety – has her in his sights and is making every effort to gain her trust. However, Simone remains resistant, feeling she can do without a man's love. That is until an unsuspecting man comes into her life and shows her what true love really is, but is he who he portrays himself to be or will Deon ultimately win her heart?

A hopeless romantic, Talise dreams of having a marriage just like her parents. When she meets a man who she feels is her soulmate, but later finds out they stand on opposite sides of religion, will this be a deal breaker?

Stacey is the brother, the strong shoulder, and the comic relief of the three friends, but when Stacey falls in love, he falls hard. Will his need to give in to his heart cost him the ultimate price?

Once the secrets start tumbling out of the closets, no door is able to contain them. Who do you turn to when your reality feels like a dream and you are sure this can’t be life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama In Cali September 5, 2011
This Can't Be Life by Shakara Cannon was a refreshing switch from all of the Gangsters and Thugs I have been reading about lately. Shakara Cannon has managed to tell us a daytime soap opera, that makes you envision the characters as she is developing them. She has given you an inside look at what happens when a child's innocence is stolen from them. But further she has managed to give credence to the saying "It Takes A Whole Village to Raise A Child". She has peppered her story with Talise's parents being there for Simone and Deon's family being there for him as well as his friends. She has giving you a glimpse into the lives of Simone, Stacy and Talise. Along with a couple of other friends like Deon and Nichelle. She was able to touch on homosexuality without painting it in a negative way. She allowed you a peek into their lives and made you become one with them. Making you want to shake them or tell them not to go around that corner or leave this one alone. Ms. Cannon seems to be an up and coming master storyteller and I for one can't wait to see what will happen next. If you are looking for a story filled with love, trust issues, self-esteem issues, sexuality issues and greed and lust, then look no further.

Happy Reading,

4.0 out of 5 stars This Can't be life July 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This was my first time reading something from Shakara Cannon. This book illustrate the lives of three character (Talise, Stacie and Simone) from various backgrounds with different agendas these characters provide antics and situations. For the length of time that it takes you to complete this novel, Talise, Stacie and Simone will become a part of your life. They'll say stupid things, and make dastardly mistakes, but when the book is closed, you'll be wishing that those characters were still around. You'll want to give them advice, steer them the right way, celebrate with them, and pat them on the back. This is a story for every type of reader, waiting on Part II.

3.0 out of 5 stars What is possible? What you will... January 3, 2012
After I finished reading this book, I had to go online to see what others were saying about it. I felt like I missed the story because with over 90 reviews, it received an average rating of a 4.5. So before writing my review, I sat down and pondered where I went wrong with this story. Then it hit me, I didn't go wrong.

The story was sprinkled with so much drama that I felt lost in the storytelling because so much was going on. My 3 star review might not be the fault of the author, but too many characters and issues are a bit challenging for me. It seemed the author wanted to touch on more issues then should be handled in one book: deaths, repressed memories, incest, alcoholism, religion, homosexuality and more. Let's take a look at the characters.

Simone Johnson continues to have the same dream night after night of a little girl and a man. She knows the little girl is in trouble at the hands of this man, but she is unable to see the faces and details. When will her mind release this trauma? Best friend Stacey was the relief this reader needed while trudging through the story. His one liners and comedy at times made me laugh out loud. I was excited when he met Tyron, but I was also shocked that he went for the terms of the relationship. Could he ever be a kept man? His heart says no, but the mind is a tricky thing. If you tell yourself something enough times, it becomes your reality.

Talise was my favorite character since her strength as a friend spoke volumes as Simone's BFF. When her mom told her that they were getting a divorce, I was worried how she would pass on that information to Simone, who was emotionally unstable to a degree. But like only Talise could do, she took care of business.

1.0 out of 5 stars nothing romantic about it August 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I must have read a different book because this was terrible and cannot figure out how anyone in their right mind would give this book 4 or 5 stars. There was nothing romantic about it. Besides the constant f bombs and other vulgar language, the detailed homosexual accounts including but not limited to taking it up the a@@ were not appealing at all. I forced myself to finish it hoping it would get better but it only got worse. By the way, I never leave write reviews. I am not that picky. I just like simple boy meets girl and fall madly in love stories. This was no where even close. Although one character did have a good story line the other two main characters most certainly did not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Closed Heart. August 11, 2011
I was very much involved in this story starring three best friends Simone, Talise, and Stacy. All three are devoted to each other but none can seem to find a healthy loving relationship in which they can open their hearts to.

Enter secondary characters Deon, Tyron, Malachi, and C. Banks who play significant roles in Simone, Talise, and Stacy's lives bringing drama, love, sex, pain, and heartbreak.

The term, "If it looks too good to be is" comes to mind here as each friend is put through the emotional wringer while trying to get to that place of forgiveness, leave the past behind, and move forward into a bright loving future. But for a number of reasons that you'll see as you read this story, leaving emotional baggage behind and starting a fresh is not easy accomplish when you find out your whole life has been based on lies, and your future seems to be running along the same lines!

So let me discuss the character Deon. At first I liked him but he listened to Byron's foolishness without hearing the other side of the story! Then the tragedy dealt him a serious blow! BUT the reader wasn't given the scene at the Playstation party where Simone says she told him off!! I felt that scene was relevant to the story and should have been developed.

"This Can't Be Life" is an excellent read! Full of twist, turns and emotional shocks!!!
If author Shakara Cannon continues to develop interesting characters and choose very carefully which scenes to fully develop and which to play down, the follow up will be a blockbuster!

A highly recommended read.

My review is based on a pre-published galley provided by the author.
