Perfect Ska, Perfect Dekker, Perfect CD,
By NwappMX7 (VA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This Is Desmond Dekker (Audio CD)
This is... well, this is Desmond Dekker, as you would expect from the album title... but this is also a rarity... a perfect music album, where every song on the album is enjoyable and memorable. The music is both beautiful and soulful... simple and hummable. Interestingly enough, the early unsophisticated recording techniques actually enhance the songs... ska sounds best when it's low fidelity. This is... the perfect Desmond Dekker compilation album. This album (which actually misspells Dekker's name as "Dekkar"... oops?) was originally released by Trojan in 1969 as a full length introduction of Dekker and his backing group The Aces to an international audience (some singles had made it out of Jamaica beforehand). As such, it is basically a compilation of his Jamaican hits. This modern CD reissue adds even more great Desmond Dekker hits - half of the songs on here are bonus tracks! Therefore you get the sublime "Israelites" and "Intensified '68" along with classics like "007 (Shanty Town)" and "Wise Man." This is... a great CD for people new to Jamaican music (be it ska, rocksteady or reggae) or those who listen to reggae and would like to discover its roots in the ska of the sixties. I highly recommend it.
