Disappointed,
This review is from: This is Everybody! On Tour (Audio CD)
I'm going to have to say overall, on this double-disc from Sander & Lee, I am disappointed.
Now I absolutely loved both of his previous "This is Everybody" releases. Those two sets gave me over 4+ hours of great music! For some reason though, this "On Tour" one doesn't do anything for me. The excitement and energy seem to be zapped out of it. The track selections just aren't that great. It's not like it's awful or painful to listen to; it's just not that interesting. I had a hard time sitting through all of it at once. It's a big letdown from what I had expected/hoped for. I'm still fairly hopeful that This is Everybody 3 will return Sander to his top-notch form. If you're a serious Sander collector, wait for the used copies to start popping up on this one.

It takes time to enjoy this CD,

When I first got the CD, I was a little disappointed. After listening to Lee's Disc for about 3 times, I started to feel the beat. At that point I was wondering why Sander did a poor job on his Disc.
After listening to Lee's Disc for about 1 week, I decided to give Sander's Disc another try, and I was surprised because Sander's disc had a better set than Lee's Disc(which was already amazing), but it just took time to get into this CD.

Expanding the Limitations of Sound,
By Kamran Kafi "Delta Heavy" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: This is Everybody! On Tour (Audio CD)
In the past several years, I have been dissapointed many times by the more and more electro-funk/retro-80s vocal style that most Djs have started playing.
This is Everybody! On tour is different. It does not take you back to the deep dark progressive sounds and beats of the Delta heavy times. However, it is far from a cheesy vocal mix overpowerd by electro sounds. This CD is a great introduction to the range of styles that encompass progressive house as it is today and somewhat allow us to open up to some of the newer elements present today. It includes tracks form different styles, all pretaining a certain pushing element and deep baseline that keeps the music interesting and energetic, without getting annoying. Disc 1 is somewaht of a compositions.starts out with a track that would fit best into a eclectic electronica genre and slowly builds up a tempo. As the Cd progresses the Basslines become heavier and deeper. Although never loosing a groovy touch, the first CD is a goood mix that does not get boering. Disc 2 starts out much faster. It is more of a dance mix then a composition. Many of the songs have driving baselines that are deep and still groovy. Although sometimes vocal, this CD keeps it interesting by alternating progressive styles. Overall I loved both CD's, more than the previous release by Sander K.

Retro-Shmetro. It's just great house music.,

It's funny. If I'd read the last few reviews at Amazon of this CD before buying it, I probably would have passed on it; I generally don't like the electro/retro 80s sound (in a House music context)... and I've heard mixes with said styles from house DJs that I admire that usually dissapointed me. But, although Kleinenberg's sets lately feature quite a bit of 80s inspired moments, the mix on these two discs is driving, modern and very inspired (although I must admit my favorite part of the two disc set is the latter half of disc two, which is very much modern/classic house).
There are a lot of DJs who jump onto a trend, and lazily sling tunes of a certain trendy style, with little regard to the song's true merit or substance. Sander seems to have an ear for tunes with substance as well as style. Sure, there's a cheesy throw-away track here and there (his own "Everybody 7", for example), but overall, it's a great set. < From one house-geek to another, Sandy's mix of Groovefire - Earthquake (Dan Sanders Remix), to West London Deep - Dark Matter, to Armin Ba Buuren feat. DJ Remy - Bounce Back, is truly transcendent (to my little mind, anyway). >

2 very different discs,

The Burridge CD is really good. Not as nice as his live sets, but flows well and he gets into a few different genres, including techno and house.
The Sander CD is garbage. Lately he has been off the mark in his live sets, and this disc is no digression. It does have electro tracks, which I don't mind if they are dropped at the right time, but on this disc they are not. It feels incoherent at times. Let me add I loved Everybody, and liked Everybody too... on tour is a different track selection than those cds. Is it worth buying? I say no. Bootleg the Burridge disc or wait for the next release. BTW I highly reccomend Lee Burridge, he's one of the best DJs playing these days.

This 2 mix cd is great! I'm a huge fan of Sander K and have had the pleasure of seeing him live. Although I can say that the live experience blows away any cd of his, that shouldn't detract from the value of this album. Sanders disc is great progressive, sometimes leaning towards funkier housey beats. His mixing is perfect and his track selection is great! Tracks such as Muscle Car by Mylo, Bounce Back by Armin and Mr.Roboto by MV are among the great tunes in this mix.
I admit i'm quite unfamilliar with Lee and the whole techy almost acidy sound of his style. Even with this being said, I really do enjoy his cd. The beautiful (I believe) remake of Du what U Du is awesome and is sure to fill the floor. I may not be a huge fan of this style of music, but I appreciate it for what it is, and im sure it would move the dancefloor as this cd is pure energy all the way through. This all being said, I'm going to give this CD a 5/5. Sanders mix COULD have been better, there are a few tracks (mainly Dark Matter), that are iffy, but the cd grows on me everytime I listen to it! Much props to Sander and Lee on this one, and I hope the next Everybody! is even better!

BOOORING,

Ok, so what does this sound like??
Compared to the two previous "Everybody" Releases which were great by the way, this is extremely boring. Both discs are primarily Tech House blends with some amazing bass lines, but minimal vocals and virtually NO melody. If this sounds like your style then you'll get lots of it. But after one or two tracks of this, I was looking for more fulfillment. To me this seems like an entire album of "filler" tracks, the ones that are played in between the would-be club anthems that are lacking in these sets.

Great mix by both Djs,

This mix has an extreme amount of energy. Both mixes are different aspects of house. If you liked Sander's everybody mixes then this should not disappoint. The start of his mix is great and just keeps building until he climaxes with Bodyrocks Yeah Yeah. This song is awesome and thankfully is followed up by another room filler Earthquake. Two songs after Earthquake he hits you with the best song on the cd. A remake of the 80's song Mr. Roboto. If this song doesn't make you move something is wrong.
Lee's mix is different and comes across in a James Holden type way. Again the first two songs on this cd are killer. And when people are saying Sanders style is too funky, how about Lee's Acid in my Fridge. Wow, this is a funky track that keeps all the darkness to it. Perfect for this mix. Other favs on this disc were Wanna get Wet, I Love You, Do what U do (Dark song as well), and the end which is also funky. What I notice is that alot of the criticism comes from listeners that do not enjoy the funk part of it. Well this is Sander, and Lee incorporated it in his disc as well. If this is a style that you do not like then think twice before buying. But I love this style and give these discs two thumbs up. Keep' em coming Sander. A+.

Half good in my opinion,
This review is from: This is Everybody! On Tour (Audio CD)
I liked Sander's disc a lot. His style is very off-beat and different than most of his peers. He has a taste for mixing unusual trance and house tracks as his style. I enjoyed his mix as much as his other "This is Everybody" compilations and perhaps the best of the 5 total discs in his sets.
On the otherhand, I cannot say much for the Burridge compilation. To me, it was boring. It didn't have the flash and sounds I have come to love in the Electronica genre. His style is much more subtle than the multi-layered and complex rhythms of most trance/house stylings. Much more simple synth cords over solid beats. Not quite my taste, but perhaps others differ. |
