This Extraordinary Life is a remarkable collection of literary magic written by a constellation of shining stars. They are autism parent bloggers, well-known poets and authors, people just like you, and some on the spectrum themselves, including one cute-as-a-button 6-year-old whose simple yet beautiful prose depicts his love for bacon, his family, and love for mixing colors. Contributors collectively illuminate a positive light on autism while uplifting readers with honesty, hope, and inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Honest & Heartfelt January 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was recently recommended This Extraordinary Life and I have to say I am really glad they recommended it. This is a beautifully touching book that explores the ups and downs, the hits and misses, and the joys and pains of raising a child who has autism or Asperger's. Rachel Quatkemeyer really brings the subject into focus with a lot of care, love, attention to detail and a clear desire to show that no matter the struggles, life is "extraordinary" in it's complexities.

What really captured my attention is the heartfelt and truly authentic tone of the book from beginning to end. This is a work of love and that really shines through; drawing the reader in with words that capture the heart, words that bring strength and words that help to enrich the lives and families of the reader. From the touching stories of those of have experienced raising a child in the Autism spectrum to words of encouragement through inspiring poetry, this is a must read just for the mere fact it is a celebration of life in the best way possible.

Though I'm not a parent of a child in the Autism spectrum or closely connected to one, I do feel like this was a worthy read nonetheless and I would definitely recommend it to others even if you're like me and are just looking for a beautiful book that will touch your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raising a Family? Get this Book! January 25, 2014
By Tsara
Format:Kindle Edition
I was thrilled to receive my own paperback copy of This Extraordinary Life yesterday. It's beautiful!!! Before pulling away from the post office I had already finished reading the first essay, written intimately and with comfortable candor by Rachel Quatkemeyer. I knew right away that this was going to be an important and uplifting collection of stories, based on Rachel's reasons and style.

And, it is!!! Without avoiding honest challenges in the world of autism, parenting, or difference in general, this collection of poems and stories encourages the reader to smile, see answers in the questions, and believe in an exciting unknown and successful life for everyone in their home!

I recommend this book to anyone raising a family. After all, whether or not your child is on the spectrum of autism, you KNOW that he/she is going to have the opportunity to become friends with someone living with invisible challenges. This book will help everyone see clearly how much fabulous that friendship could offer!

And for parents of children with autism, there are valuable and beautiful lessons in each story. Regardless of your personal parenting style, you'll find treasures in the adventures of those who have ventured before you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of love went into this book. March 3, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As an autism mom, I spend far too much time focusing on the negative. I wish a book such as this one had been handed to me five years ago when my son was first diagnosed on the autism spectrum. "This Extraordinary Life" helped me to reprioritize and see what a wonderful life has been handed to me. While I was reading I realized that, if I were given the choice, I would still pick my own quirky husband and that there is no child on earth that I would prefer over the three beautiful ones that God gave me. Even knowing what I know now, I would not want to change any of that. It is obvious that a lot of love went into the writing of this book. The poop songs made me laugh and the genuine sincere tone of the entire book warmed my heart. I would recommend anyone with a spectrum kiddo to keep a copy of this book on hand. On a bad day when your child has broken your best television set and is banging his or her head against a wall, a quick look at one of the short stories will remind you why you keep on keeping on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this positive-minded book! January 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am actually only about one-third of the way through this e-book, but I've thoroughly enjoyed all the stories and poetry I've encountered thus far. I have been reading one piece each day, and when I have gotten all the way through, I just may begin again! I love how it sheds a light of positivity on autism, and truly, I think every family, friend, and professional involved with autism in any way should have a copy of this beautiful book!

This book is a MUST inspirational read for any parent whose child faces developmental challenges everyday. It is a beautiful piece of work with contributions from other parents who deal with the complexities of raising children with autism or Asperger’s. Unless one has a child with special needs, it is difficult for people to understand the full spectrum of emotions that accompany even the most simplest of tasks for their child. Rachel Quatkemeyer has put together a message of hope and encouragement for all parents; that is, with love for your child there is no limit to their future and the positive things they can accomplish.

This book is a perfect compilation of stories, poems and an outlook on autism that shines instead of sending us the regular 'doom and gloom' message that most people convey. I have a daughter with Aspergers and I have been positive, as this author has, through my experience, and let me tell you, it makes all the difference. Not only is this author brilliant in her writings, but her kids obviously shine through in this novel as well, and we all know who is responsible.

This is a great book and I will definitely be purchasing more works from this author in the future.

More About the Author

Rachel Quatkemeyer grew up in a little brown house in Northeast Ohio surrounded by horse pastures, but don't ask her to saddle a horse. She can't do that.

Autism mom. Homeschool mom. Wife. Writer. Dachshund cuddler. Colleen Hoover fan. Given a choice of Pepsi or Coca-Cola, she'd pick Pepsi. Cherry Pepsi.

Rachel finds humor and optimism in nearly everything and enjoys sunshine more than anything. When she's not writing, editing, working, or schooling her children, she frequently dreams of living at the ocean but would settle for testing out hammocks in the Caribbean.
