Biography

David Holmes began his career as a DJ in Northern Irish pubs in the 1980s, and in the 1990s he ran successful club nights in Belfast Art College. He released his debut album This Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats (1995) which took, as its inspiration, Holmes' enduring interest in movie soundtracks - an interest which is reflected in the cinematic scope of his work. Editorial Reviews

Import pressing of his debut album which is out-of-print in the US. As an aspiring DJ, the Irish-born David Holmes wanted to score movies, but producers weren't exactly beating a path to his door. So instead, he decided to make imaginary soundtracks of his own--to set music to the films he carried round in his head. This album was the result: an ambitious, diverse and, yes, profoundly cinematic collection of electronic tracks. The opening cut, 'No Man's Land,' was reportedly inspired by the Daniel Day-Lewis film In The Name Of The Father--and in the same way, it's possible to see "Gone" as a relic from some late-1960s arthouse classic, thanks to the breathy guest vocals of Saint Etienne's Sarah Cracknell. Jah Wobble guests on 'Got Fucked Up Along The Way,' while Steve Hillage contributes some typically mesmeric guitar to 'Inspired By Leyburn', but mostly this is Holmes's baby, showcasing his gift for arrangement and his fondness for atmospherics. Since its release, he's even gotten to compose some music for film and TV--proving, yet again, that you make your own luck. Universal. 1998. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slick soundtrack for a private mind, September 15, 1999

My first foray into D. Holmes' particular brand of music has been well-rewarded. I give it 3 stars cuz it seems to only be breaking the surface of something that could be much much more--but the second CD (included in all US releases, from what I can tell) offers nice variations that more than satisfy. Music that simultaneously puts you in a trance and allows you to think should always be applauded for expressing such a wonderful paradox

4.0 out of 5 stars dum di dum, August 16, 1999

Despise the horrible cover the music is surprisingly good. Not directly uplifting but not as dark and gloomy as the cover suggests. I'm surprised Holmes has only one review (now two) because this is quality music alongside darker songs of Massive Attack and Underworld. Almost everybody is gonna recognize the first song from somewhere and there is another track on the album that got slightly remixed by Kruder and Dorfmeister (sessions). I wish it would be a double album but unfortunately I have no idea what reviewer no 1 is referring to. My copy of this album came as a single cd?!

you guys, find a credit card and buy this album now. This is one of the best cds of the year, no doubt about it. The 2nd cd has cool songs and remixes, but the first cd is well worth it. You are getting such a bargain, you'll feel guilty. 2 awesome cds. Buy IT. the music is beautifuly done. Long Live David Holmes (not the mtv vj)
