I loved reading this book! I was kind of expecting something that could be read to children that explains to them what sensory processing disorder (SPD) is all about. What I found was something even better! I found a book that could quickly and easily explain to an older child AND adults what SPD was all about...that was a big bonus to me 'cause it wasn't just any children's book! It was a super quick read and can be read and understood by anyone who might be interested in learning why SPD kiddos are truly sensational kids!

I was DELIGHTED to see the wonderful and graphic illustrations in this book. They really brought Gabriel to life right before my eyes...down to seeing him chew on his sleeve as a means to calm and organize his body! I loved the way the story and illustrations were brought across the entire two page spread...it wasn't isolated to a single page. The illustrations literally jumped off the page in bright and vivid details!

After buying a single copy from Amazon (and receiving it in record shipping time...thanks Amazon), I returned to purchase multiple additional copies to give to my chilren's school, daycare and pediatrician! I am a mom to two boys who have SPD (just like Gabriel) and my friends and family hear me talking about how it affects them and our family. I immediately brought this book to work to have my coworkers read! To watch their face in sheer delight as they read and flipped through the book and then finally looked at me with that "Oh, I finally get it" look...it was all too good to be true...truly PRICELESS!!

Thank you Hartley Steiner for being such a dedicated mother to perservere with such a big project in order to further educate the world about SPD. Our world needs trailblazers just like you to help educate those around us!

Finally, finally, a book for every elementary school's resource library.

This is Gabriel Making Sense of School teaches about our seven (yes seven!) senses and what happens when children don't interpret sensory input appropriately.

Hartley Steiner explains the challenges our children with Sensory Processing Disorder can face in school in an engaging, easy to follow style that is a perfect complement to the whimsical illustrations from Brandon Fall. This story will immediately engage both the children who hear this story and the teachers that read it.

This is Gabriel Making Sense of School should be in every pediatrician's, therapy provider's and educator's office. If you have a child with Sensory Processing Disorder in your circle, this terrific book should be on your "Must-Have" list. It's on ours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource April 2, 2010
Format:Paperback
I have two children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)- a 4 year old daughter who was diagnosed at 2, and a six year old son who was diagnosed last fall. I was so excited to hear about this book because figuring out what accomodations would help my son in kindergarten was challenging, and I read this book was written to give everyone (teachers, parents, and students) a better understanding of SPD and how it affects school and learning for children with SPD.

You first note that the book is absolutely gorgeous- the illustrations are vibrant and colorful and eye-catching.

This book contains nine pages of text: an intro, a page for each of the seven senses, and a conclusion. I think the contents and length are just perfect for an elementary-aged child's attention span. Each facing page is colorful and packed with beautiful pictures that illustrate and relate to each of the senses and how SPD may affect it.

I will be purchasing additional copies of this book to share with our occupational therapist and with my son's school- what a great resource!
