4.0 out of 5 stars lively entertainment, great musicianship, November 18, 2004
This review is from: This Is Garth Brooks [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Filmed at the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, on an "in the round" stage, Garth Brooks and his fabulous band are in high gear in this 1992 concert.
Interspersed with the concert are interviews with some of the band members like Garth's sister Betsy who plays bass, and others including his wife Sandy; though some of what they have to say is interesting, the interviews are too often and too long, interrupting the flow of energy that emanates from this fantastic concert.
The musicianship is superb, and Garth's band members are: Ty England/guitar, Steve McClure/steel, Betsy Smittle/bass, Mike Palmer/drums, James Garver/guitar, Dave Gant/fiddle & keys.
Garth is an excellent songwriter, and wrote or co-wrote 8 of the 15 songs listed ("The Thunder Rolls" is my favorite in this concert).
The sound is good and total running time is 85 minutes.
This is a terrific concert, though not quite as fabulous as the 1997 "Garth Live from Central Park", which I highly recommend to all Garth fans.

The songs on this video are:
1: "Not Counting You" ~ Garth Brooks
2: "Rodeo" ~ Larry Bastian
3: "Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House" ~ Boyd/Haynes/Robbins
4: "We Bury the Hatchet" ~ Kimes/Brooks
5: "The Thunder Rolls" ~ Alger/Brooks
6: "The River" ~ Shaw/Brooks
7: "Much Too Young (to feel this damn old)" ~ Taylor/Brooks
8: "What She's Doing Now" ~ Alger/Brooks
9: "Papa Loved Mama" ~ Williams/Brooks
10: "If Tomorrow Never Comes" ~ Brooks/Blazy
11: "Shameless" ~ Billy Joel
12: "Friends in Low Places" ~ Blackwell/Lee
13: "The Dance" ~ Tony Arata
14: "You May Be Right" ~ Billy Joel
15: "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" ~ Daniel Baird

As a lover of concert videos and an ardent fan of GB, I think this Texas concert presentation (along with personal highlights) is awesome for anyone who is inspired by Garth's music. His rendition of Shameless was incredible (Billy Joel should be proud). Powerful. Second only to Central Park -- but until that's published ... I guess this is #1.

When I first started listening to country music I was introduced to this video. After seeing it for the first time I had to watch it over and over. Garth Brooks is the best performer. He's really energetic and very entertaining. Watching this will make you want to get up and dance. Garth really knows how to put on a great concert. If you love Garth Brooks you have to buy this video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garth Changes The Game, October 13, 2010
This review is from: This Is Garth Brooks [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Up until the early 1990s, country music was populated by guys in sparkly jumpsuits with perfectly coiffed hairdos singing ponderous, slow ballads. It took a rock-and-roll fan from Oklahoma to change all that, and this tape showcases the transformation in full.

As soon as Garth Brooks burst onto the country music scene in the late 1980s, it quickly become clear that country music would never be the same. Garth kept the simple themes of country songs, but packaged it like a rock-and-roll arena show, the kind of performances he was mesmerized by in his own youth. Stadiums started filling up to seeing this rockin' cowboy, and the rest is history.

With his high-octane show and high-energy persona, Garth Brooks captivated music audiences like nobody had ever seen (or may ever see again). Plus, it didn't take political/lifestyle statements (e.g. Toby Keith) or outlandish antics (ala Lady Gaga) to fill the seats...just good old fashion country music with a rocking backbeat and energized vocals.

This tape, probably more than any other, showcases that frantic side of Garth, the one that can never stand still and is always jumping around and looking for new ways to get the audience involved in the performance. Though the Central Park concert may be his best ever effort, "This Is Garth Brooks" deserves a top spot for its showcasing of Garth's pizzazz.

If you are already a Garth fan and haven't seen this tape, where have you been all these years?! If you are a little wary of the Garthster, this is as good a place as any to be introduced to his rollicking style of showmanship. Either way, there isn't much here that is not to like.
