Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The moving van shows up in front of Linus and Lucy's house. What will Charlie Brown's life be like without his blanket-toting pal?

5.0 out of 5 stars A bittersweet (but ultimately happy) Peanuts charmer, April 3, 2000

"Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?" packs the wistful, bittersweet punch of "Snoopy, Come Home" into a half-hour package. But, of course, it has a happy ending. The emotions and comedy work well together, as Charlie Brown grapples to deal with his grief as his best pal, Linus (as well as his chief nemesis, Lucy), prepares to move away. I particularly like the denial and willful self-delusion of Sally, who refuses to believe anything other than that her sweet babboo is coming to take her on a date. But, eventually, the moving truck pulls away and Linus even parts with his beloved blanket (leaving it as a gift to Snoopy). Is that how the story ends! Watch to find out. This special is poignant without being smarmy -- a feat beautifully executed by the late Charles Schultz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye, Linus and Lucy (and come back soon!), June 13, 2003

This review is from: Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The idea of "Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?" came from a cartoon story Schulz published in 1966. To think that 2 of Schulz's most important characters would be written out of the series was unthinkable (similar in the vein of "Snoopy Come Home"). Charlie Brown misses his best buddy, Linus, of course. Sally misses him, too (her hopes of her "sweet babboo" taking her to the movies would be dashed!). Schroeder reluctantly admits he misses Lucy (piano recitals would never be the same without that pest interrupting him!). Where would Lucy earn all her nickels? Peppermint Patty does her best to help good ol' wishy-washy (and lonely) Chuck. Linus gives his blanket away to Snoopy. The going away party is a scream, with Joe Cool's Party Caterer Services to keep the party alive! One thing I remember about this special is that it came out the same year I moved away from the town I'd lived in for years. I'd like to see it released on DVD soon like many other Charlie Brown specials and all 4 films!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?", December 4, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
To many viewers, "Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?" may seem like a sad movie. After all, who can imagine Peanuts without Linus, Charlie Brown's best friend, and Lucy, Linus's sister and the distributer of five-cent advice. But, no matter what, it's happening. Mr. van Pelt has been offered a new job, which he accepts and causes his family to move a new neighborhood, far, far away from where the rest of the gang is. This is bad enough for Charlie Brown, but his sister, Sally, was expecting Linus (her sweet babboo) to pick her up for a date. Linus even sends his beloved blanket back to Snoopy.

Of course, humor is sprinkled in, making this a funny additon to the Peanuts collection. As a subplot, Peppermint Patty suggests making "Chuck" feel better to Marcie, who thinks that Patty's being sweet on Chuck. Angrily, Peppermint Patty storms off. Later on, at one o'clock in the morning, Peppermint Patty decides to see if Chuck is being sweet on her. So, she calls him and asks him if he'll go to the movies with her. Of course, Chuck, half asleep, says yes, but doesn't know what he agreed to. So, when Peppermint Patty doesn't get picked up, she feels stood up.

There was only one episode, but I recommend this.
