Book Description

February 17, 2009
Like the other Sasek classics, this is a facsimile edition of the original, first published in 1966. The illustrations have been meticulously preserved and the facts updated for the twenty-first century. The charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek’s playful narrative, make perfect souvenirs that will delight both children and parents. This is Greece captures the flavor and tradition of the birthplace of Western civilization. There’s Athens, with its spectacular views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, temples, theaters, and marketplaces; architecture-renowned Corinth; Mycenae, inhabited since 3000 B.C.; Olympia, home of the gods; Delphi, famous for its legendary oracle; and the beautiful isles. There’s also modern-day Greece, where life is lived on street corners, in squares, and at tables amid reminders of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have gem, February 15, 2008
This review is from: This Is Greece (Hardcover)
I alsways liked Sasek and I love Greece so when I discovered that there was this book I ordered an ex library copy. It is nice as always and detailed, full of informations and of different characters, as the glasses seller and the button seller. Of course sasek describes Athens in a way that is far from the actual one and also the greeks are not the same anymore. The archeaological sites are still there and the pieces in the museum also, so it's nice to read and the illustrations are beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars another quality entry into the sasek library!, May 23, 2011

This review is from: This is Greece (Hardcover)
sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i would, however, say this entry is perhaps a trifle dry. despite this, the book is still highly recommended.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the country...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the country WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either greece, or simply in wonderful illustration.
