It's readable, but not great. Belanger knows how to string sentences together better than some would-be fiction authors, but the book often falls flat due to poor character development. This is another yaoi-like story where the character is a sensitive gay man (or in this case, demon). I'm a sensitive gay man, and I like to read about gay characters, but there are so many books out there where the main character has nothing else going on in his personality but that he is sensitive and gay. We're three dimensional, just like everyone else. The fact that every male character who is not a villian also just happens to be gay and want to hook up with Matthew was difficult to believe as well. The portrayal of the Victorian boy brothel as a liberating place of sanctuary for sexual expression was also misguided, I feel. Victorian brothels were notorious places of exploitation and slave like conditions, often including as many prepubescent children as not. I doubt the male versions were any better, more likely they were worse due to even fewer options being available to GLBT people of the time period.
From a mythological standpoint, I'm a bit annoyed that Belanger chose to rewrite the incubus mythos in the image of her own metaphysical theories, because I'm sure this will spawn countless of gothic otherkin thinking that they're tragic sex demons who just want to give the gift of love and pleasure. Said people will then rally against the original concept which gave them the word incubus (or succubus), claiming it's a mean misrepresentation of their people, and no one should be allowed to use it in the original form it was intended because it will hurt their feelings. No more infernal night terrors? Disappointing for those of us who liked the medeival version better.Read more ›

I ordered the Kindle version of this novel and was totally engrossed in the world Ms. Belanger created. I liked the mix of detail and "space" that allowed my imagination to carry me along with Matthew's journey. I am looking forward to returning as soon as a second novel is available. The period in which it was set in was during a time of rapid change and confusion for many people and this helped reflect the growth and confusion felt at times by the lead character. The novel moves quickly and seamlessly with my only complaint was that it ended too soon. If you are a fan of otherworldly stories set with a healthy and accurate dose of history then you will enjoy this book. I do not recommend this book for younger readers (under 16) but it is an excellent adult novel that written in a manner that respected my ability to understand and appreciate a complex and entertaining storyline.
