"One of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation and, quite possibly, of all time - rivaling the dexterous sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the scintillating verve of Diana Krall." - Christopher Loudon, JAZZTIMES

Editorial Reviews

Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan teams up with special guest jazz masters Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Ernie Watts on saxophone, and a host of other top flight musicians on this unique CD of jazz, swing, gospel, samba and soulful ballads. Highlights include Toots' solo on the beautiful love song Estate, sung by Jackie in it original Italian, as well as Watts' soulful sax solo on the exotic songs of lament, Sari, sung in the native language of Brazil's neighbor, Suriname. Three different jazz bands back up Jackie on this CD, and members include Cannonball Adderley drummer Roy McCurdy, bebop pianist Jon Mayer, Duke Ellington trumpeter Allen Smith, and Sarah Vaughan drummer Omar Clay.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Get This One! January 25, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Man, is this a good album! Best vocal jazz album of 2003, that's for sure. Listen to how Ms. Ryan covers "Lover Come Back to Me": she starts about mp on about a middle C, and ends the song ff, about 2 octaves up. Jackie Ryan is one of the few jazz singers around who could have made a career in opera, if she had wanted. As it is, she probably has the richest voice of all jazz singers. But the way she uses her voice is even more impressive. Listen to how she whispers "Estate" (Jon Hendricks "In Summer"), then belts "Jump for Joy" in a manner that would have made Mahalia Jackson proud. If you've read this far, then get to your mouse and buy this immediately. This is just tremendous.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real heart warming album April 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A really beautiful emotive voice, impeccable execution, a first class selection of songs (that make this album especially stand out in her stable)...turn this easily into a 5 star album. Though released in 2003, it beats most contenders in 2012. I did not find her subsequent US acclaimed "Doozy" double album as good as this one in many respects (-CD 1 was the best). I particularly enjoyed the title song, September and frankly several other songs here were of equivalent standard. The instrumental backup is also extremely good. Thoroughly recommended if you like classic jazz vocals (Kate Reid being another superb singer, even better). (Um, why is Ms Ryan not producing good albums abit more frequently of late?)
