Biography

Singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was one of the most successful blues artists of the second half of the 20th century, yet his hypnotic brand of blues was in many ways a throwback to earlier times, before rules of rhyme, meter, and chord structure became standardized. The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which… Read more in Amazon's John Lee Hooker Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A great John Lee Hooker collection!, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: This Is Hip: Charly Blues Masterworks 7 (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite collections by John Lee Hooker. Worth the price for "Big Legs, Tight Skirt" and the title track alone. Sort of "polished" sounding without being bled dry with overdone production values, rockin', retains that raw feeling without the usual poor sound quality that goes with it, just great all around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roots of Rock -- sounds as fresh today as it did decades ago, June 3, 2002

John Lee Hooker gives new meaning to the Muddy Waters phrase "The blues had a baby and they named it Rock and Roll".

There are other Hooker collections available, but Charly was the label that got the really cool stuff together back when hardly anyone realized what truly cool music sounded like (it was the age of disco when 'the most popular music' totally [stunk]). Anyhow, this collection has a mix of well known and obscure tunes, all of which are classic rock archetypes.

U2, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and just about anyone who ever did blues-based rock paid tribute to John Lee Hooker at some point. Like all great blues, this stuff is really easy to play, but extremely hard to play really well.

Best cuts: "Dimples", "Solid Sender", and a really spacey but haunting version of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".
