5.0 out of 5 stars This Honest Age - An Honest CD !!, January 10, 2005

This review is from: This Honest Age (Audio CD)
This was the first CD I bought in 2005, and I will find it hard to better it.
I bought it after hearing a snippet on another website and thought it was worth listening to the whole CD, and I don't regret it one bit.

As stated in another review, all but one have been self penned by Jen. They are well crafted and sung with a fine voice. Jen cites Jonatha Brooke amongst her influences, and you can hear a bit of Jonatha in her songs, but she has her own distinctive sound, which again sets herself above many of the tired, over-produced singers that fill the charts.
I can't recommend this highly enough. A new talent has arrived.
Cheers, Dave.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shadow of the Moon, August 12, 2007

This review is from: This Honest Age (Audio CD)
Jen Woodhouse's CD "The Honest Age" is a strong set somewhere between folk and pop. Her voice, which she uses expressively, has a hushed breathy quality, a vocal cousin to Suzanne Vega. "Your Window" starts like a soft melody then punches with good energy and eventually blooms into what I can most closely identify to scat jazz singing, "So I'm standing here and he's watching me and we're at a stalemate on 16th Street and I don't know how to feel standing under his window sill." "Walking into Winter" bubbles with strong energy as Jen seems to have so much to say that it threatens to burst from the context of the strong structure and then blooms into her scat singing and the chorus, "So we went walking in winter and the sky was so crisp and cool; I saw you laughing, laughing under the shadow of the moon." She turns in strong vocal performances on "Halfway There" & "Not Myself." "This Honest Age" is a strong effort for its great vocal performances, sterling musicianship and some distinctive songwriting. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jen Woodhouse is amazing......, June 2, 2009
This review is from: This Honest Age (Audio CD)
Jen Woodhouse makes my list of "Where The Heck Have I Been?!!" artists. I use this expression to note my amazement of never hearing this amazing artist before! There are nods in her music to some of my heroes....Susanne Vega, Dar Williams, Amie Mann.....but look no further for such; she is an ORIGINAL and destined to be in the mainstream of America's music consciousness. Please buy this CD......treat yourself to a sensual, intimate, and unique listening experience. I haven't heard anyone who excited me this much since I heard Sophie B. Hawkins years ago. Keep on making that beautiful music, Ms. Woodhouse. Your fans will be awaiting your next 7 CD projects, and I will be first in line!

5.0 out of 5 stars a MUST for all music lovers, January 7, 2005
This review is from: This Honest Age (Audio CD)
With so many talented musicians selling out these days, it is very refreshing to hear an artist of Jen's calibur stay true to her music.

Each lyric on the album, with the exception of one song, is written by Jen herself. Her unique style and heartfelt lyrics make this CD one that everyone should own.
