For me, Luther Vandross, while holding onto his "superstar" status, has yet to make a TOTAL album that fits his mellifluous vocal instrument. After listening to any one of the discs in his lengthy catalogue, I often felt that they each just fell a wee bit short.

Well, with my annual purchase of holiday music, I decided to make this seven-year-old release a part of my collection.
And, man, am I glad that I did.
The singer has put together a smoothly produced, elegantly delivered "treat" for all as they celebrate the most joyous of holidays. Vandross does his patented "Lutherisms" on each song; making even the few songs presented uniquely his. The perennial favorite "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is given a spin that only he, and he only alone, can give.
The measure of an album for me can be found in the first songs and, on that note, the singer scores a winner. "With a Christmas Heart", "This is Christmas" (magnificent), and "The Mistletoe Jam" (reminiscent of "Till My Baby Comes Home") are as good as he gets.
I rank this one as a latter-day equivalent to the Christmas album made by the late, great Nat "King" Cole. That's how outstanding it is.

I believe it is.
I have had this album for 4 years now & it's still my first choice among other Christmas albums that we have.
Luther's vocals are truly remarkable. The crispness & clarity of the recording has to be heard to be appreciated. Fortunately my 93 Ford Fairmont (Australian) has an exeptional sound system & many a pedestrian has cast an inquisitive gaze my way when I have had "Every Year Every Christmas" cranked up.
The fact that Luther has used many new songs of his own, rather than just re release an album of traditionals is a refreshing change for anyone looking for a standout Christmas Album.
Using other big name artists such as Clarence Clemons, Marcus Miller & Darlene Love is also a big plus.
Buy this Album & to get the best out of it listen to it on a really good system you will be truly inspired at this inspiring time of the year.
Hey Luther, How about a tour down under!

at Christmas is this CD by Luther Vandross. Luther does a beautiful job of capturing the feelings of the season, from the bouncy/funky "Mistle Toe Jam," to the soulful, determination of "Every Year, Every Christmas," which is my favorite song on the CD. Luther makes each song his own, whether it's a Christmas standard ("My Favorite Things") or his own original work ("This is Christmas"). The perfect party CD on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and the days to follow. A new, original classic.

This product is a re-released version of Luther Vandross's 1995 Christmas album "This Is Christmas." In the mid-90s, it seemed that every high-profile R&B act was releasing Christmas albums for a quick buck, but this is truly one of the very best. With ten songs, seven are originals written by Luther, so it makes for a very memorable listen among a sea of generic albums with nearly identical tracklists. "This Is Christmas" does not explore the Christian side of Christmas (the only song that even mentions Christ is his performance of "O Come All Ye Faithful"), but songs are split between one of two types: the slow Christmas love ballads and the upbeat Christmas party tunes. Production is wonderful throughout, often simple and consisting of well-written piano parts. The songs are both well-written and often catchy, quite memorable, which in my mind are all great signs of a good Christmas song. Guests are minimal, only one duet exists among the tracklist. I highly recommend "This Is Christmas," one of my favorite Christmas albums.

The disc opens with "With a Christmas Heart," a slow and dramatic piece about the power of love at Christmas. He delivers a truly inspiring performance here. The title tune isn't quite as good but is another keeper, slow and thoughtful. You'll love "The Mistletoe Jam (Everybody Kiss Somebody)," a fast and funky party-starter that reflects Luther at his best. "Every Year, Every Christmas" is a classic ballad about a man's Christmas feelings after a breakup, it's excellent. He sings his own upbeat interpretation of John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," then moves into a wonderful version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." My favorite song on this album is "I Listen to the Bells," a cleverly written pop duet with Darlene Love.
