Book Description

This Is the End is a historical analysis of the apocalyptic mindset and the culture of fear. It assesses the validity of modern social fears, establishes a compelling connection between the apocalyptic mindset and the culture of fear, and asks what, if anything, can be done to address these fears.

With nearly half a million Americans attempting to abandon society in preparation for the collapse of the world as we know it there is a need for answers to some of America's most intractable problems, but where to start?

This Is the End suggests that the starting point might be found in a modern form of moral renewal based on reason, common sense, and a limited faith in the promises of science. One thing is clear: if Americans continue to allow the dystopian spirits of apocalypticism and the culture of fear to determine U.S. social, economic, and foreign policy, they will never be able to achieve a better future.

This book is a very thorough survey of the different ways cultures have viewed their own futures. As an Evangelical I had assumed Dr. Irvin was writing about how my own religious beliefs affect the culture I live in. Instead, I learned that my own culture was a product of colonists trying to build a New Jerusalem in North America and wide eyed optimists looking to Science to bring in the Millennium. The most disturbing thing was the extent to which non Religious Apocalyptic thinking affects my own culture. From dystopian entertainment focused on man made disaster to political pundits playing on our own cultural fears by accusing those who oppose their views of being on the side of those who want to bring about the end of the world. Dr. Irvin's point is well taken; we need to stop waiting for the world to end and start talking to each other. Until the robots take over, we have to live with each other.
