You would have had to have been living under a rock buried under sand in different galaxy to have not heard the song of the summer, Icona Pop's "I Love It." It was everywhere and like it or not is going to be the standard by which people judge this album. Well did Swedith duo, Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, manage to put out an album full of more "I Love It"s? No. But that doesn't mean plenty of songs don't make a very good attempt.

Many people are already buzzing about album closer "Then We Kiss" as being the next big hit, but it lacks the aggression that made "I Love It" standout for me. "In the Stars" though has a euro pop edge with a bombastic chorus which I think makes it possibly even better than "I Love It." "Just Another Night" though is probably my favorite with its more melancholic tone and allows the girls to shine individually on the verses allowing glimpses of needed rawness in a very slick polished soundscape. "Girlfriend" borrows two lines from Tupac's "Me and My Girlfriend" and twists them into a totally new meaning. Big risk for a big payoff.

Caroline and Aino got together about four years ago, and rumor has it that the very night they first met at a party was when they decided they were going to make music together. This clear chemistry and almost familial blending of voices is the thread that holds this album together. When it's right--it's very very right. And then at other times, you wish they just let loose a little bit which would have given the songs a needed hit of emotion.

This album is not going to blow your mind, but it will occupy your mind for a long while after the music has actually stopped playing from your speakers. Very solid pop/dance music from two fantastic vocalists.

For fans of bands like The Ting Tings, Florrie, Charli XCX, Natalia Kills, Marina & The Diamonds.

I recently saw Icona Pop in concert (more on that later). If you are new to them, Icona Pop is a Swedish duo consisting of Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt, bringing jubilant dance-oriented music (not unlike, say, Lights, Little Boots, Robyn, etc). They have been building some serious buzz with their early releases, in particular last year's EP called "Iconinc EP". Now comes the debut album.

"This Is... Icona Pop" (11 tracks; 33 min.) is frontloaded with the album's strongest tracks, starting with the opener "I Love It (feat. Charli XCX)", with its irresistible and thunderous chorus. "I Love It" is the band's breakout hit and signature song so far (it also appeared on last year's EP). The songs follow one another fast and with a furious energy (which is a good thing). "All Night" sounds like another single in the waiting. "We Got the World" features the synth-and-drum sound prominently (it reminds me of Ke$ha actually). "Ready for the Weekend" (another holdover from that EP) is yet another irresistible sing-along. Highlights on the second half of the album include "In the Stars", which make you want to jump up and down as you scream out the chorus, and the same can be said for "On A Roll", and "Light Me Up". The weakest/least interesting song on here is the closer, a short "Then We Kissed". But in the end, that's a quibble. If you like fun, dance-oriented music, you cannot go wrong with this album.

Just a few weeks ago I saw Icona Pop live at the Laneway festival at the Meadow Brook near Detroit. The girls played in the late afternoon, and brought a tremendous 45 min. which the enthusiastic crowd absolutely ate up. They played just about all of the tracks from the then still unreleased new album, and a couple of older tracks from the EPs. Icona Pop were one of the biggest surprises (in the best possible way) for me from the entire festival. If you have a chance to see them live, do not miss them! Meanwhile, "This Is... Icona Pop" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Swedish pop duo Icona Pop have been near inescapable as their shouty anthem "I love it" has appeared in tv shows (GIRLS), tv commercials and of course on the radio. The act released an album in Sweden last year but this album featuring some of the best tracks and new songs serves as Icona Pop's international debut. Fans expecting more of "i love it" will find plenty to like but Caroline and Aino have crafted a batch of songs with different flavors.

The album opens with the hit "i love it" and continues with the party with more dancey, euphoric eurpop. Tracks like the 1-2 punch of "All night" and "We got the world" are europop at its best with chunky beats, layered synths and those shouty lyrics. "ready for the weekend" a track from their swedish debut is included and features a host of vocal distortions and loops. It could easily be a lost alvin and the chipmunks track during the verses. Things get ravey on "On a Roll" with chirpy bleeps and that catchy "do-do-do-do" vocal loop that gets stuck in your head. "girlfriend" samples Jay-Z but turns that hook upside down with its insistent dancepop sounds and relentless beat. And finally "in the stars" a punchy pop song has a addictive chorus with its "its in the stars, thats who we are" while a walls synth soars underneath.

The album's slower moments are also quite amazing and none of them really slow or ballady in the traditional sense. "light me Up" - the tale of love gone wrong drops the beatsbut has lots of electronic sounds swirling and twinkling in the background. "Hold on" departs the europop formula and veers into slight rock territory with banging drums and and a Joan jett-esque vocal delivery. The chorus is anthemic and uplifting.
