Review

Who knew the red planet could look so gorgeous in black and white? (David Rosenberg & Jordan G. Teicher Slate 2013-12-20)

I am completely blown away by this atlas of the surface of Mars...Stunning, curious and abstract images of the planet's surface reveal its three-billion-year history. Extraordinary images of the dunes of Noachis Terra and Velles Marineris canyons are breathtaking. This book is a perfect marriage of science and art. This is an extraordinary book, and takes photographs of the earth from above to a new level. This is a giant leap for a photo book and makes you wonder if perhaps there is someone out there photographing us. (Cheryl Newman The Telegraph 2013-12-11)

"The book makes a planet 140 million miles away a little more tangible, and feel a little more closer." (Cool Hunting 2013-11-01)

"Compiled in the forthcoming book This is Mars by editor Xavier Barral, these images-each spanning a width of 3.7 miles-show the complexities of the legendary planet, from the astonishing depths of its canyons to its ice-covered poles and sweeping black dunes." (The New Republic 2013-11-01)

In amazingly clear images captured by a HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we see our neighbor planet's surface in all its ruggled glory - craters, mountain ranges, chasms, and canyons that resemble microscopic specimens. The back of the book is thick with scientific data. (Jack Crager American Photo 2013-11-01)

This Is Mars assembles 150 images of the red planet (albeit in black and white), taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter over the past few years. Put together by designer Xavier Barral, they create a compelling portrait of the geology of an alien world. (Jonathan Bell Wallpaper 2013-10-28)

'This Is Mars' celebrates the art of exploration. (May-Ying Lam The Washington Post 2013-10-14)

THIS IS MARS...offers all the photographic evidence you need to feel the excitement behind NASA's literally other-worldly expeditions. (Jordan Kushins Gizmodo 2013-10-07)

"This Is Mars" offers a previously unseen vision of the red planet...Conceived as a visual atlas, the book takes the reader on a fantastic voyage-plummeting into the breathtaking depths of the Velles Marineris canyons; floating over the black dunes of Noachis Terra; and soaring to the highest peak in our solar system, the Olympus Mons volcano. (Yahoo! News 2013-10-04)

A journey through Mars' impressive landscape has been made possible through a series of incredible images that reveal its surface in unprecedented detail. The images allow you to plummet into the breathtaking depths of its darkest canyons, float over its black dunes and revel in the beauty of the red planet's spiralling whirlwinds. (Ellie Zolfagharifard Daily Mail 2013-10-02)

In a stunning new book, This is Mars, editor and designer Xavier Barral makes visual magic from images captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. (TIME 2013-09-27)

It's a lavish book of eye-popping images. (Rebecca Horne WIRED Rawlife 2013-09-20)

The photographs are credited to NASA/MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter). Its the most sophisticated camera mankind has ever built and these photos are some of the highest resolution images ever taken. These images are not intented to be art - they are scientific documents, yet they are as great as any art I have seen. For us in the creative world obsessed with photography and art, these images are a strong tonic reminding us of how big and still unknown the universe is. (Alexander Galan WESC 2013-09-01)

I bought this as a Christmas present for my NASA-loving Dad. He's always been into the whole space scene ever since seeing the lunar landing as a kid. He's always been really difficult to shop for, so imagine how excited I was when I found this book. A word of caution, however, this isn't a small book. Weighing in at about 6 pounds, you could probably throw four legs on this bad boy and use it as a coffee table (if the publishers like this idea, feel free to contact me). Prime shipping for this book was a fantastic surprise. This isn't a glorified picture-book, no sir, this book comes with a description of the satellite and the project, totaling about a third of this book, followed by a bunch of high-res pictures, and then a section with smaller versions of the pictures accompanied with descriptions. As soon as my dad opened this, he sat down, and read the entire thing. This book is well worth the price tag.

This book is really amazing: this is very high definition images from Mars surface as seen by the HiRISE camera of Mars Reconnaissance orbiter. These Black & White images give a new vision of this myterious planet. Never seen before, the images transmit a dramatic vision of Mars.

This is a coffee table book, not for learning science. The images are amazing in detail and clarity. Totally recommend it just for the ooohhs and aaaahs.

Stunning, beautiful, amazing. There is nothing to compare to it. Also a fine and lovely binding, beautiful paper. It's a pleasure to own and hold and touch something so fine. Three times the asking price would have been fair.

There are quite a few good Mars books on the market these days, but with "This Is Mars" by Al McEwen et al, I have fallen in love with the planet all over again. This is one of those rare books that you can really get lost in. Photos have been beautifully processed to show the kinds of detail I look for when contemplating a hike in the Rocky Mountains or Moab. From dunes to subtle outflow channels, from soaring mountaintops to majestic buttes, the huge book is absolutely gorgeous. Many of the images border on abstract art. It's not the kind of book you'd want in your luggage, but that's just fine: its large format enables the viewer to delve into Mars as you never have before. Highly recommended.

I saw this at a book store in bad condition for over $100 so I bought on amazon. I haven't yet looked at every photograph—but this is with out a doubt the most beautiful collection of images I've ever seen. The quality is great, design is great—but simply the huge variety of landscapes and textures without any captions or explanations leads the mind to grand thoughts of what happened (or what happens) on this planet. I can't believe I just wrote this review—because I still feel speechless (and I've had it for a week). One of my most prized possessions.

If you can accept that every image has been unsharp-masked and then contrast-enhanced to the extreme, then this book is absolutely beautiful. If you are a Mars purist, then you might start to take offense at the fact that these images no longer represent the actual surface of the planet. That said, this book really is stunningly beautiful. The images are sharp and of very high quality, and the landscapes are varied and all uniquely interesting. Any fan of geology should love this book.
