This is another one of those bands that probably wouldn't have shown up on my radar if it weren't for my 20-year-old daughter. THE CRANE WIFE was my first introduction to the band. I now own their entire catalog, including purchasing the MP3 download of THE KING IS DEAD on the day of release.

When I got the e-mail from Amazon stating that I could download the new version of "This Is Why We Fight," I promptly did so because it was obvious this was the version the band intended to release. While some reviewers are whining that this version doesn't improve on the previous version, they're missing the point. THIS WAS THE VERSION THE BAND INTENDED TO RELEASE. A commenter (J. Kyle Sterup) on an earlier review suggested that perhaps the 4:25 version was intended as a single-only edit. However, in checking other websites (including Allmusic.com) it's apparent that the 5:30 version should have been included on the album, not the 4:25 version.

So what's the difference? Essentially there is none. At least not so far as the song "This Is Why We Fight" goes. Both songs are identical all the way to the 4:25 mark. Then after a brief pause (about five seconds), there is a 60-second coda which is little more than a lo-fi song fragment featuring banjo and harmonica including lyrics about picking burrs from his dog's feet. And, yes, the volume of this segment is considerably quieter than the song proper.

Bottom line, it's not a question of whether this version is better. It's the one that should have been on the album in the first place.

Great track February 1, 2011

I listened to The King is Dead multiple times while driving to and from Winter X Games 15. This track is terrific, and while I would normally expect a bonus audio clip to be added to the last track rather than the next-to-last, it's still an interesting addition which helps to differentiate this track from the rest of the album.

Odd addition February 1, 2011

This version really has me confused. I bought the album when it was released and was recently made aware of an update to this song. It adds an extra clip of a song that is barely legible at the end. I have no idea why?
