Melodies Shine Through, March 26, 2002
This review is from: This Isn't It (Audio CD)
I bought THIS ISN'T IT, because of my teenage-like obsession with the Wonderboys of Rock, The Strokes. I was fully expecting a novelty disc I could play at parties to get a chuckle, which it is (perfectly illustrated by the picture of Arnold Drummond aka Gary Coleman, on the disc itself). But it's also a bit more than that. The lounge cum muzak versions of the four Strokes songs on this EP are chuckle inducing, but they are also perfect testaments to the sublime melodies of Casablancas & Co. I find myself enjoying this as background music while working or relaxing, not just as a joke. As far as whether or not members of Pulp, or The Strokes, were invlolved I don't buy into that. This very easily could have been created by one strange fellow in a basement studio. But who knows? I guess that's part of the fun. Don't be surprised if you start hearing these delightful renditions of melodious tunes in your doctor's offices or high-rise elevators. And don't be surprised if your toes start tapping.

a cool little novelty record of instrumental versions of Strokes songs done with casio keyboards, drum machines, and a few electric guitar solos... sounds cute.

i just can't remember....., February 20, 2002
This review is from: This Isn't It (Audio CD)
our kid, jodie got a new cd t'other day- THIS ISN'T IT by THE DIFF'RENT STROKES'. the DJ from Ambition, played it the other week. it's an ep of covers of the strokes, played on the organ in an easy listening style. apparently Damon Albarn's done it. Hard To Explain sounds like one they'd play at blackpool while old folk tea danced. i missed the last bus, i caught the last train,...... The Modern Age Is mad, its sounds like an 80's synth song from maybe Fame or Flashdance, with people in spandex and leggings dancing in a warehouse in downtown mahattan with big hair and great teeth. quality, it's just what you want.
Is This It is like something you'd play Bingo to, if you were playing in a strangely rythmic manner, like a robot, kraftwork with a bingo hall hammond organ riff and a cheeky little bass to liven up the old folk.
Last Nite has a nice club singer vibe, maybe an old fashioned northern chicken in a basket style entertainer could croon it round making a visit to cheer up codger on a hospital ward, while a jolly rusti lee type nurse dances someone in a wheelchair round. Watch out for that xylophone solo while dunking a biscuit in your tea, it's a bit of high point.
all in all, very pleasant.
