Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Those finding a kindred spirit in the ebullient actor and comedian will hear his cheerful voice bubble off the page, giggling as he calls himself "the fastest yolk in the West." Others will forgo the humor for the appealing, homestyle recipes. The focus is on Brooklyn-Italian-American food, although a Chinese chicken salad and chef Paul Prudhomme's blackened redfish are offered along with stuffed calamari, mamma's marinara sauce and sausages with peppers and onions. Family and friends, including a number of celebrities, contribute their favorites. Fans can sample Burt Reynolds's beef stew, Loni Anderson's chicken with wild rice, Anne Bancroft's vegetarian chili or Mel Brooks's red clam chowder. Desserts run the gamut from the eponymous Dom's no-sugar baked apples to "death by chocolate" #1 and #2. Photos not seen by PW. First serial to Woman's Day; paperback rights to Pocket Books; Literary Guild selection.

From Library Journal

Comedian DeLuise loves to cook and loves to eat; his exuberant cookbook is full of childhood reminiscences, inoffensive name-dropping, and some quite appealing recipes culled from his extended family and friends. The ingredients are fresh, the dishes are usually fairly simple to prepare, and the result is a chatty collection of Italian family fare. Not a necessary purchase, but there is likely to be some demand. JS

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this...it'll make you feel better, August 27, 2004
This review is from: Eat This It'll Make You Feel Better (Paperback)
My mom bought this book when it first came out in the late 80s. This was probably the first cookbook I ever looked at. I loved the stories and started trying out the recipes when I was about 11 or 12. Throughout the years the book has lost a few pages, gained quite a few smudges, and has literally broken in half, but it's still my favorite cookbook. In fact, I like to think it is this book that ultimately inspired me to go to Italy to attend culinary school. I'm now moving into my very first apartment and am ordering another copy of it (don't want to take my mom's) so that I can have it with me...even though I've pretty much memorized it. I know I'll be using this book my whole life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book, It'll make you feel better!, July 13, 2000

A terrific cookbook with mouthwatering home cooking recipes. This endearing cookbook is written with love, tears and more love and the recipes included read (and taste) like old world home cooking. Mama's Spinach Rolls, Veal Piccata and plenty of sauces are among the very easy recipes that seasoned and new cooks will enjoy. Dom DeLuise shares recipes from friends, families and his own kitchen and like all good cooks, has a story for each and every one. A joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars the easiest and by far the best italian cookbook ever, October 26, 2005

I lived with a very Italian aunt who made the best food, and for so many years I assumed that these recipes- lental soup, pasta fagioule, eggs with tomato sauce, pasta primavera etc were from hand me down recipes. To my surprise, after inquiring about how to make "her tuna fingers," she handed me this book. It blew me away how simple and easy the recipes were. Really good Italian food! Its a shame that I bought so many Italian cookbooks trying to perfect these dishes when they were all right here. Dom Deluise adds personal stories which are a little sappy but still entertaining as well. It gives you something to read while your cooking dinner. Enjoy
