3.0 out of 5 stars A reader in No. Cali
I was so eager to read this next book by Yolanda Joe, but I found it very hard to follow. Because I have no idea about the broadcasting environment I felt like I never got the point of the story. I was in hope this latest book would be as thrilling as her past two books. Like another reader said, wait for the paperback.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little different, but worth the read, May 28, 2000
This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
This was not the typical Yolanda Joe of Bebe By Golly Wow and He Say/She Say fame, but it was a good read. Ms Joe captures corporate America as she changes venues from her relationship books. She gives us an good look at the ongoing on in what some consider the glamourous world of television newcasting. They make it look so easy on the news, but oh.. the behind the scenes action can be more exciting. I found the characters real and very interesting, and easy to relate to. Even thought there was alot of racism and sexism, I found the book easy to read and and quite interesting. Looking forward to Yolanda Joe's next change as she tackles mysteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, April 25, 2000
This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
'This Just In' is a thoroughly satisfying read. Yolanda Joe aptly describes her characters and the world of broadcast journalism. Before reading this novel, I knew nothing about the field. I now feel like I know the inner workings and the cut-throat enviornment of broadcast journalism. The characters were shown in realistic settings, with real life experiences. Their methods of problem solving were interesting. I like this novel because I could relate to the characters and I could feel what they were feeling and for the same reasons. This Just in is cetainly worth the money that I spent on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars YoJoe writes from the heart, September 16, 2000

This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
This was my first Yolanda Joe book, but it won't be my last! I really liked her style -- so easy to read. And as someone who's been in the TV business for 9 years, I can attest that every word is TRUE! Joe handles with finesse the issues we all deal with every day, and not just in the TV industry: balancing family and work, climbing the corporate ladder, relationships. Reading her book was like having a good heart-to-heart with your girlfriends. When I finished I felt like a good friend had just said to be "Girl, I know what you're going through, but there's hope!" Though the book's central characters are primarily African American, the themes and issues she deals with transcend race. It's worth picking up a copy -- you'll enjoy this!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Just In This is a GREAT Book!, September 12, 2000

Yolanda Joe has done it again! This is a great book. Although I have no interest or previous knowledge whatsoever in broadcast journalism or broadcast news, I was able to follow this book without problem. I am a great fan of Joe's style of writing since "He Say, She Say" and was not disappointed by "This Just In." I loved the storyline between the five women! More specifically, I liked the interaction between the four African-American women and the one lone Caucasian woman. In Corporate America - the situation is typically reversed, so it was eye-opening to see things from Megan Rippley's point of view. The dynamic relationship created by Ms. Joe makes this book worth the effort. (If you are new to Yolanda Joe's style and/or you find the jumping storyline hard to follow - I would suggest beginning with "He Say, She Say" as there are fewer characters to keep up with. WARNING: After reading that book, you will be hooked, so save yourself some time and get "BeBe's By Golly Wow" at the same time!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, October 29, 2002
This review is from: This Just In (Paperback)
If you are looking for a whole lot of drama and dish this is not the Yolanda Joe book to read. It's a fictional account of real life. I like to call it auto-fiction. This book teaches you a lot about the news media from the view of women of different races. I liked the fact that the characters were able to overlook and overcome the problems they were faced with and look at the big picture:regardless of race or age they were all in the minority. This book made me view my newscasts differently now. I like this book because it was thought provoking and a chance of pace from most AA novels.

I will never be able to look at the news the same! After reading This Just In... I gained a whole new respect for the nightly news and all of the drama that goes on behind the scene. I found the story and the characters totally believable and I stayed up all night to finish the story. If you are looking for a light read with positive female role models, this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cute story about the rough world of journalism, September 6, 2000
By
This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
I loved the orginial idea of how This Just In was written. I really I was actually watching a news broadcast. I can see this very easily becoming into a teleplay. Very creative and interesting for the eye to read. The characters were very realistic and the dialogue keeps the reader wondering why the world of television broadcasting can be so cut-throat. My favorite character was Kenya. A young wife and mother being tossed into a world of media sharks and divas to really show her craft and gift of writing and becomes a success.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Just In....write on time, June 26, 2000
By
This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
This was a 'write on time' read for me since I just earned a B.A. degree in Journalism. 'This Just In..' gave me an opportunity to get an inside sneak preview of office politics, in relations to racism and sexism, in the newsroom. It is a 'must read' for anyone interested in the field of broadcast news. And for those just curious, it will certainly raise your level of appreciation for newsroom staffers and how their job interacts with their personal life.

Yolanda, keep writing......(and feeding us with your real-life stories.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!, November 20, 2001
This review is from: This Just In (Hardcover)
This is a story that exhibits comaraderie among sistas in the complicated, and sometimes unfair, production/television scene. Kenya, Denise, Holly, and Alex form a bond and stick together so they will not be conquered by the powers that be. I am unfamiliar with production, so this book gave me insight on that profession.
