4.0 out of 5 stars AN INTERESTING (IF CONTROVERSIAL) INTERPRETATION OF "BOOK OF MORMON GEOGRAPHY", October 5, 2011
This review is from: This Land: Zarahemla and the Nephite Nation (Paperback)
Wayne May also wrote/produced This Land: Only One Cumorah! (Volume 2), This Land: They Came from the East (Volume 3) and Book of Mormon Archaeology in North America - A Lecture. Edwin Goble modified his ideas substantially when he later wrote Resurrecting Cumorah.

They wrote in the Introduction to this 2002 book, "thanks to the many hours of work from the Mesoamerican researchers, one recognizes the Book of Mormon Lands doesn't take up the entire hemisphere. The text demands a more limited area than that... The broader limited geographies help one to understand how people could fill the whole face of the land. One can also understand how there was 'an exceedingly great distance' between the Zarahemla/Nephi area and the Land of Many Waters, but it was still a relatively limited area."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"The Michigan artifacts that we will discuss in this book are examples of artifacts that are merely controversial. That doesn't make them frauds, as there has not been due process one way or the other to authenticate them or to prove them fraudulent." (Pg. 18)
"By now, many well-recognized experts were denouncing the (Michigan) artifacts as forgeries, some already accusing Scotford of counterfeiting them... (Investigators) were joined by a representative of the Mormon Church, Dr. James Talmage... On first reading Talmage's notes, it becomes obvious that he went to Detroit with the explicit intention to discredit the artifacts (my personal evaluation)." (Pg. 25)
"The authors of this book at least take no position on authenticity or fraud until we see something to sway us one way of the other. At least we are working toward the end of FINDING OUT, and presenting the case as it should be presented, objectively, and not dogmatically declaring something to be so without any ground to stand on." (Pg. 48)
"Joseph Smith was never criticized by his adversaries about the information contained in the Book of Mormon concerning the ancient inhabitants of this land. His contemporaries all could see the earthen works with their own eyes... The history of THIS LAND, as told in the Book of Mormon, was not questioned by Joseph's contemporaries." (Pg. 150-151)
"It is our hope to encourage new beginnings with the archaeology of the eastern portion of this land and to picture North America as serious contenders for Book of Mormon geography." (Pg. 165)
"The purpose of this first book is to enlighten our readers that there is geological and archaeological support for the Book of Mormon in North America just as many of the early brethren so stated. We certainly do not claim to have all the answers... The authors are hopeful that formally trained university scholars will someday step forward, and work on and contribute to the overwhelming information that is available in the eastern half of THIS LAND." (Pg. 209)
