I wish I'd had this book!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
I love this wild, funny book. It reminds me what it was like to love my new baby more than anything in the world. Back in the ancient days when I had my children, we just didn't talk about about aches, maternal worries, and the insanity caused by lack of sleep. It also reminds me of The Vagina Monologues, with its honest and often searing honesty about the female body.

Humor and Depth,

This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
This book was an accessible and escapist read, which I read very quickly. It has a humorist approach to heavy themes about marriage and parenting that very few people seem to talk about. I think mothers should read this book to realize they are not alone, and non-mothers/parents should read this book for some much-needed insight into the motherhood experience (there is a lot of judgment out there). All will smile throughout, and finish it in just a few days.

Hard to Put Down,
This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
After spending the day with two toddlers I am completely exhausted and immediately fall asleep at night when I attempt to read. This is the first book in three years that I have actually breezed right through. I have thoroughly enjoyed the humor, which often causes me to laugh out loud, and the authors ability to so honestly and bodly capture the joy and despair of raising a child. It is a must read for all mom's and soon to be mom's.

Only half-way through, and already I know.,

This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
Already I know that I want to give this book to all my friends who are mothers. Especially the ones who are about to pop or have just given birth. Samantha Wilde's first book stands out because it manages to capture the essence of the early days motherhood. It's unabashedly honest and hilarious, and it will make you laugh repeatedly.

Actually Laughing Out Loud!,
This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
Disclaimer: I know the author, but this book is too good NOT to write about.
It's rare to find a book that makes me actually laugh out loud, but this one had my toddler looking up at me several times to ask what was so funny. Our heroine finds herself at the extreme end of the most common new-mommy situations: with the arrival of Joy's baby, her husband suddenly seems AWOL, her mother is too involved in her own life to help much, her mother-in-law is the epitome of mothers-in-law, and the vacuum that used to be a good night's sleep and a good marriage gets filled in with chocolate, fantasies about her hot yoga instructor, and baby-head-smell huffing. If you haven't been there, you're not a mother. If you have a friend who's just become (or about to become) a mother, give her this book. Really. Aside from chocolate, laughter really is the best medicine for coping with a new baby.

Hated this book,
This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
I read this book for one of my book clubs, one for stay at home moms, and we thought that we would all have a great time reading about "our lives". The first few pages seemed entertaining enough but it quickly became apparent that I was never going to like Joy. She whined and moaned through out 98% of the book, made some stupid decisions, and was a self-proclaimed martyr. Some things she said/thought were funny, but most just offended me. If you want to read a book that focuses on all of the bad parts of being a first time mom from a woman who never figures out how to really handle any of these situations, with an occassional sprinkling of I love my baby so much this has to be worth it, this is the book for you.

This Little Mommy HATED The Main Character,
This review is from: This Little Mommy Stayed Home: A Novel (Paperback)
I thought this was going to be humorous look at new motherhood. Instead, the main character, Joy, just whines and complains throughout the whole book. I did not find her likeable or sympathetic at all.
It appeared early in the novel that this new mother would be someone that new moms could relate to and would be able to find something of themselves in her. Instead, she is self-pitying, spoiled, and totally self-absorbed. The humor fell flat too. Just didn't find this book funny at all.
