A hilarious spin on a favorite rhyme

Everyone knows the rhyme of the five little piggies and what each one did, but do you know the story behind the story? Well, then, sit back and listen to Donald's grandmother as she improvises on a favorite nursery rhyme. Nicholas Heller's unique sense of humor, accompanied by Sonja Lamut's irresistible illustrations, makes this a picture book to tickle your ribs -- as well as your toes!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1. Children familiar with the beloved "piggy" rhyme must wonder "Why?" from time to time. Why did one little piggy stay home? Why did one get none? Well, here for those nursery wonderers are the answers, as a talented, imaginative grandmother reveals all in a bedtime story, from the first little piggy who goes off to market alone when his brother won't get out of bed, to the last little piggy who sings "Whee, whee, whee" as he returns from a visit with his grandparents. Lamut's charming illustrations accompany Heller's comical angle on a favorite nursery rhyme, and the whole attractive parcel will certainly lead to a surreptitious round of "piggies" after every cheerful reading.?Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Ages 3^-5. Grandma is telling her grandson the story "This Little Piggy," but her version has several notable variations from the original. The first little piggy does head off to market; the second piggy doesn't just stay home, he takes a sumptuous bubble bath. The third piggy eats the roast beef that's supposed to be for dinner, and the fourth piggy gets none because he's been doing his exercises. And the last piggy isn't at home at all--he's visiting his grandparents. The mildly amusing text really gets its life from Lamut's fresh, bright artwork featuring pig-children in sprightly patterned clothes going about their day. A good choice for the story-hour crowd, who will enjoy being in on the joke. Ilene Cooper
