Editorial Reviews

Review

"...no photographs but wonderful, engaging drawings of life in London. It is amazing how a children's book can open up a whole world... how much the...kids learned from this book. This book made them excited about London...and motivated them to experience it.." ~Outlook by the Bay

Originally, I read about this series in National Geographic Travel. I bought the London book as a gift for a seven year old who is a certified Harry Potter fan and, as a result, becoming quite the junior anglophile. While this may not be an up-to-date trip to London (some of the landmarks mentioned are no longer there), it sparks the imagination and whets the young traveler's appetite. The illustrations are fun and it doesn't stay on the shelf long at our house.

My son (7-year-old now) has been reding this series since age 4 every time we visited a new city. We have London, Paris and San Francisco books. They are all brilliant to read pre-trip and post-trip. Although cities have chnaged over the years, the books give a very good feel of the cities. They also give footnotes of updates. Not only my son enjoys them enormously, but my husband and myself learned a lot from the series. Highly recommended.

Exclamations come to mind: beautiful design and drawings, comprehensive and to the point guide! And this goes for all his city guides Paris, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong. You might argue it is a bit old fashioned, but I think you are confusing it with "it s one of the Classics". And when something is called a Classic, it is timeless and a Must-Have! Trust me, it is worth your while and money!

One of my favourite artists. I have most of the series now, however, I was very let down with the quality and colour of the editions I have received from Amazon - the colours are dull, printed on dull paper. I have an edition of "This is San Francisco" which I purchased many years ago, printed in Germany, and the colours are clear and bright - the books I received from Amazon, printed in China are disappointing.

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images, interesting facts, and this particular entry makes me yearn to discover the london of yesterday/today in person.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either london, or simply in wonderful illustration.

I first saw this book while visiting London, England. It cost something like '20 pounds. I decided I'd wait til I got home and order it off of Amazon instead. Glad I did - it was far less expensive. It is also a great book. Miroslav Sasek's books on different locations across the globe are great - fun art, informative and a nice sense of humor as well. A little outdated but the new editions tell you what has changed in the city since the original publication. I have actually been collecting this series of books for every location I have been to (if there is a Sasek book out there for it - and so far there seems to be!).

I bought two of these as gifts for friends children - they are just gorgeous. The artwork is beautiful and I would love to get the complete collection for my kids as we all love looking at the pictures and learning a little about the world (although of course this book is 'of its time' so things have changed somewhat since it was written)

My son is possibly the youngest anglophile ever. And we are planning a trip to England, I had seen this book on Land of Nod website, but didn't purchase it because I would rather get a good bargain. I bought it on Amazon, great deal. And I loved the book. Yes, it is a bit old, well, classic. I loved that in the back it has updated information. Not only did my son love it and it gave us some great ideas of places to visit while we are there; but his grandparents who lived in England and travel back every few years were impressed by the book. I want to get the entire collection of "This Is" books.
