Book Description

April 24, 2004 4 and up This is . . .
With the same wit and perception that distinguished his charming books on Paris, New York, and San Francisco, M Sasek presents stylish, elegant London in This is London, first published in 1959 and now updated for the 21st century.  Here this beloved illustrator shares his impressions of London with its beautiful buildings, historic monuments, bridges, parks, shops and Piccadilly Circus, black cabs, Horse Guards, and famed Underground.  Sasek has cast his loving eye on London and the result are colorful, sophisticated pictures of one of the most exciting cities in the world, paired with a lively text that keeps a playful sense of fun while taking the reader to the highlights of one of the world’s great capitals.
This is London is a facsimile editions of Sasek’s original title. His brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved and remain true to his vision. With the passing of time facts have been updated where applicable in the back of the book.  The result is a treasure with an elegant, classic look and delightful narrative that will charm both children and their parents, many of whom will remember the same book from their own childhood.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Trip to London February 1, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Originally, I read about this series in National Geographic Travel. I bought the London book as a gift for a seven year old who is a certified Harry Potter fan and, as a result, becoming quite the junior anglophile. While this may not be an up-to-date trip to London (some of the landmarks mentioned are no longer there), it sparks the imagination and whets the young traveler's appetite. The illustrations are fun and it doesn't stay on the shelf long at our house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great travel guide for kids January 9, 2007
By Kipling
Format:Hardcover
My son (7-year-old now) has been reding this series since age 4 every time we visited a new city. We have London, Paris and San Francisco books. They are all brilliant to read pre-trip and post-trip. Although cities have chnaged over the years, the books give a very good feel of the cities. They also give footnotes of updates. Not only my son enjoys them enormously, but my husband and myself learned a lot from the series. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful July 5, 2007
Format:Hardcover
Exclamations come to mind: beautiful design and drawings, comprehensive and to the point guide! And this goes for all his city guides Paris, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong. You might argue it is a bit old fashioned, but I think you are confusing it with "it s one of the Classics". And when something is called a Classic, it is timeless and a Must-Have! Trust me, it is worth your while and money!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is London, indeed! February 3, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first saw this book while visiting London, England. It cost something like '20 pounds. I decided I'd wait til I got home and order it off of Amazon instead. Glad I did - it was far less expensive. It is also a great book. Miroslav Sasek's books on different locations across the globe are great - fun art, informative and a nice sense of humor as well. A little outdated but the new editions tell you what has changed in the city since the original publication. I have actually been collecting this series of books for every location I have been to (if there is a Sasek book out there for it - and so far there seems to be!).

3.0 out of 5 stars Comments on This is London by Miroslav Sasek November 25, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of my favourite artists. I have most of the series now, however, I was very let down with the quality and colour of the editions I have received from Amazon - the colours are dull, printed on dull paper. I have an edition of "This is San Francisco" which I purchased many years ago, printed in Germany, and the colours are clear and bright - the books I received from Amazon, printed in China are disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite entries in the sasek series! May 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images, interesting facts, and this particular entry makes me yearn to discover the london of yesterday/today in person.

and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.

i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either london, or simply in wonderful illustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Classic Children's Book March 23, 2011
By MM
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought two of these as gifts for friends children - they are just gorgeous. The artwork is beautiful and I would love to get the complete collection for my kids as we all love looking at the pictures and learning a little about the world (although of course this book is 'of its time' so things have changed somewhat since it was written)

A friend was traveling to London and I remembered other books from this series that I had as a child. I used it as a gag gift which she enjoyed very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but fun
These books are nearly 5 decades old, and even with the end notes, they still feel very dated. But they give the kids a view of London, and they are entertaining. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars out dated info
the book is charming in a retro way but there is so much misinformation that the publisher had to add a whole page in the very back showing the corrections on the dated info. Read more

This book has beautiful pictures and is worth buying for that reason alone. However, I thought the presentation of the content, although very informative, was a bit dry. Read more
