Editorial Reviews

Buzz Osborne, the legendary grunge progenitor who has helmed the Melvins for thirty plus years, releases his debut solo full-length album, This Machine Kills Artists. This Machine Kills Artists is a different kind of animal. Rolling Stone gave listeners early access to music from Osborne's acoustic release, premiering the song Dark Brown Teeth . The magazine described the song as doomy, ill-angled and with the Beefheartian edge his band is renown for.

Buzz just knows how to write good songs.

For the best King Buzzo TMKA experience, I recommend you put on your headphones and listen to it loudly!

This definitely sounds like the Melvins, especially the Melvins of the past ten years.

As someone who has listened to every Melvins album quite a few times, I hear a lot on this album that is reminiscent of other albums. In fact, I had the grand idea that you could pastiche riffs/sections from songs on albums such as Stag, Nude With Boots, Hostile Ambient Takeover, A Senile Animal, etc. and you'd create electric versions of some of the songs on this album.

What I like most of this album is Buzz's lyrics. The songwriting works in interesting ways in this format. I do miss the powerful drumming of Dale Crover, but the production and quality and playing is great on this album.

What I like least is, as mentioned above, doesn't feel like there's much new territory explored here. The Melvins and Buzz have always been visionary and original in their approach to their music and the way they operate in the industry. This album basically sounds like demos for a new Melvins album. There's a couple really catchy parts, a few examples of Buzz trying some unique singing styles, but all in all it's basically Buzz solo. Oh wait, that's what it was intended to be. I guess I would've preferred more of a "solo album" approach with more experimentation/avant-garde rather than just Buzz with an acoustic guitar.

A companion disc of Melvins tunes just Buzz solo on guitar I think could be more interesting than this disc of originals that sound like outtakes from The Bridge Screamed Murder or Nude With Boots.

That said, I give it four stars because I love Buzz and support everything he has done until now. My opinion doesn't matter but it's fun to write reviews. If you like the past few Melvins albums, you'll like this one.

If you dig stuff like acoustic Zeppelin you will appreciate this. Very well written songs and its great to hear them played acoustically.

I have been playing this album over and over again since it came out. I am a long time Melvins fan, and typically I love some of the stuff, and hate most of the stuff I don’t love. King Buzzo has done a fantastic job with This Machine Kills Artist. The music is aggressive and beautiful and sound being hammered out on acoustic guitar. Buzz’s vocals are about as good as they get (he isn’t a great singer) and the lyrics are fun if you care to listen to them. The song styles are something akin to Stoner Witch, just played all acoustically and without Dale on drums. I would love to catch Buzz on his current tour promoting this album. I highly recommend this to fans of The Melvins or fans of hard acoustic rock.

I agree w/the previous reviewer that these tunes aren't too different from the tunes Buzzo writes for the electrified Melvins. However I'm cool w/that. They're good tunes. I'd love to hear the Melvins play these w/the full band configuration! Hopefully Buzzo will leak a few of these into their sets. Until then they sound great on this release. This stripped down affair proves that Buzz doesn't need to employ a gargantuan full band sound to get his riffs and melodies to get over!

This Machine Kills Artists is an interesting twist by King Buzzo. It is a nice album to hear him play some good songs in a more stripped down setting. If you are a fan of the Melvins there shouldn't be a reason for you to not like this unless you absolutely hate acoustic albums.

All hail King Buzzo!

This debut solo-acoustic record is just as heavy and intense, if not more so, than any of our favorite Melvins records!

For the best King Buzzo TMKA experience, I recommend you put on your headphones and listen to it loudly!
