Book Description

December 9, 2009
For This Marvelous Country is the true life story of a B-17 combat pilot in the Eighth Air Force, 92nd Bombardment Group in the European Operational Theater of WWII. Bill struggles through twenty-five combat missions, including the epic air battle, Schweinfurt. Then, after a stint in the States, he volunteers for a second tour, anxious for combat and eager for the responsibility of a crew. Bill and Marg's wartime correspondence began in 1943 at her mother's persistence. Their letters were "friendly, but not familiar"; a reflection of Bill's military training.

About the Author

Carol Rose Offutt is married, the mother of two adult children, a former college instructor and a member of the 92nd USAAF-USAF Memorial Association. A few years ago she spoke with several men she found crying as they knelt by a B-17 Flying Fortress on display. She then took a tour of that refurbished relic of a plane. With that personal experience, she realized why her father woke in sweat from frantic nightmares and why her mother was so smitten with her flyboy, Bill.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bomber and his Babe, January 22, 2012
This review is from: For This Marvelous Country: Counting on me to get them back home (Paperback)
This is an enjoyable book about a bomber pilot named Bill communicating life on base and combat through letters to his girl Marg during World War II. Though most of the book details Bill's stories in the letters Marg saved, any longing for Marg's correspondence was satiated by the pilot as he brings her and us readers up to date in all facets of his training, missions, comrades and romance. The progression from friendly to something more familiar grows nicely with surprising and honest revelations between the pilot and his girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars very descriptive of the times.., July 9, 2010

This review is from: For This Marvelous Country: Counting on me to get them back home (Paperback)
I actually had the pleasure of meeting the main characters of this book and was fascinated by their life and relationship. They were octogenarians when I knew them but were always so devoted to one another and warm and charming to all they met. Marg was especially intriguing as she was always learning something new and had the most open and inquisitive attitude. She was very inspirational to me and I can only hope that if I reach her age, I am still learning and reaching for new opportunities and experiences. At the ripe young age of 80, she took up oil painting and her "flyboy" Bill would bring her to class and then come and pick her up. He was so in love with her still, theirs was a very heartwarming union. I can hardly wait for more installments to their "story" and hope the author will make good on her intentions to use the remainder of her parents' memoirs in future writings. They told some wonderful, funny stories about their family life and their large brood when I had the honor of visiting them once in their home in Maryland. I will never forget either of them and am so glad that their story will be carried on for future generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book to Read, February 7, 2010

This review is from: For This Marvelous Country: Counting on me to get them back home (Paperback)

Not knowing what it was like to be living and being part of World War II, I found this book to help me understand what it was like to live during the time. The author has done a great job of bringing the life of her father from his early years to becoming a pilot to the hard missions over Europe into Germany. The book was very well written and completed with all the letters written by a young pilot to a supporting pen friend. I found the book interesting to read and feel I know now how hard it was for a pilot and his crew to be under so much pressure and completing a mission in very difficult times. If it was not for the courage of these men we would not be experiencing the freedom our country has now to enjoy. Thanks for completing such a wonderful book for us all to read.
