4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Home Milwaukee, May 3, 2000
This review is from: This Is Milwaukee (Hardcover)
Mr. Wells has written an amusing history of my home town. Covering all of Milwaukee's recorded history and a bit of its pre-history, the book takes a look at what made Milwaukee what it is today (or at least what it was in 1970, when my edition was published)! The book has fascinating stories of th highlight of Milwaukee history, including ancient inhabitants of the area, the Bridge Wars, the Civil War, Prohibition, the 60's and everything in between. The book reads like your favorite great uncle telling stories. Some events are told in slightly teasing versions, and sometimes the details have been fleshed out to make it more interesting. And like any great uncle worth his salt, Mr. Wells includes some of the naughty details that Grandma might not appreciate being included (illegal stills, red light districts, gambling, riots), but that keep Junior asking for more. A good read.
