5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting story of a unique time in adoption history., October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: This Must Be My Brother (Hardcover)
This Must Be My Brother is a remarkable book about the adventures of a partime nurse and homemaker who goes to Vietnam to escort 100+ babies and children back to the United States for adoption, just before the final pull out by the United States. Much to her astonishment she becomes involved one of the largest and most dangerous adoption transports in the history of international adoption - Operation Babylift. LeAnn Thieman shares her adventures with us with charm and captivating honesty. Her descriptions of the events leading up to the flight back via cargo jet with the children is sure to keep you turning pages. Just one warning - I don't think it is possible to read this book without wanting to adopt (or adopt again)!

This review is from: This Must Be My Brother (Hardcover)
As a child in the midwestern US in the 60's, I was aware of the Vietnam War, and even remember hearing of Operation Baby Lift. At no point in my life had I "lived" that as much as I felt the experience Leann shares with us in this book. It is definitely a story of what actually happened to Leann and Carol, as well as the hundreds of babies they were able to help escape the throes of war as Saigon was on the brink of collapse. It took me to a time I was aware of, but hadn't actually experienced in the way these children and the people who came to their aid. What true humanitarians, and what a great glimpse into the reality behind the headlines.

I live in Colorado and was aware of the Denver group working to bring babies out of Vietnam. I already had two adopted children and then gave birth to another. If I had not had the third child, my name would have been on the list to adopt one of these babies even before the emergency flights happened. So this book really felt like I was reliving a well remembered time.
