5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible collection of the new wave in goth music
I was perusing the used cd bins today when I came across this three cd compilation. The second I saw the list of songs on the compilation, I knew I had to buy it. The first two cds are just thrown together while the third disc is a non-stop mix cd by DJ RiB (as in Razed in Black). I am a huge fan of bands like VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, and Wolfsheim. 2.0 out of 5 stars This is just dance music
I bought this CD expecting to get a compendium of the hottest bands in a genre where each band sounds unlike every other band. Gothic music is, after all, about unique perspective and artistry. When I first decided to get this CD, it was a choice between it and a CD by Voltaire. I now wish I had gotten the Voltaire CD. Because this CD does not have Goth music on it...

A lot of the songs are remixes too. Another reason for buying this box set was that I always wanted to hear what Claire Voyant, L'Ame Immortelle sounded like. Needless to say they rocked my socks off. I absolutely loved "The Truth Behind" (L'Ame Immortelle) and "Majesty" (Claire Voyant). I definitely want to look into acquiring cds by each band very soon. I also had to hear the Apoptygma Berzerk remix of Switchblade Symphony's "Sweet". Normally I am used to listening to Switchblade Symphony at a much slower, more trip hoppy pace but Apoptygma Berzerk really cranks out the energy in this song and gives it an added boost of energy. Fear Cult does a really interesting take on Blur's classic "Boys & Girls". I certainly wasn't disappointed in the Icon of Coil remix of VNV Nation's "Genesis". Icon of Coil did an amazing job at remixing one of my favorite VNV Nation songs. I certainly wasn't disappointed with Funker Vogt's "Cold War". I just love that band to pieces. Other favorite songs include Pax's "Catch My Fire", The Birthday Massacre's "Video Kid", and Spahn Ranch's "Remnants". "The remix cd was amazing as well. The perfect cd to listen to on a Saturday night before hitting the nightclubs. I loved "This Is Neo-Goth". This 3-cd compilation showcases the best of today's hottest goth/industrial/EMB acts around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Define Neo-Goth?, February 23, 2005

This review is from: This Is Neo-Goth (Audio CD)
What is Neo-Goth? I think that people are forgetting that "goth music" does not just mean death rock. It could be mope rock like Morrissey or Bauhaus, or it could be energetic and angry like Apoptygma Berzerk. This album is called "Neo-Goth" because I am guessing that Cleopatra records (the company that distributed this album)wanted a compliation of energetic dance-floor goth. However when they realized that they had too many favorites their list was split up into two box sets: "This is Neo Goth", and "This is Industrial". To me, this album says it all. If you are a fan of VNV, Assamblage 23, and Apop, then buy this album!

This album is worth forking out your bucks. But the title is not quite right. It's not totally neo because you have the regulars on this compilation: Apoptygma Berzerk, Wolfsheim, Switchblade Symphony, etx. and is more electo-industrial than goth. But maybe this is the new-wave of goth. Don't get me wrong though. This four disc set is a veritable treasure chest of sound and I love every cut and remix. It is totally a five star product.

5.0 out of 5 stars deffinintly worth the money, December 24, 2004
This review is from: This Is Neo-Goth (Audio CD)
I found this compilation cd in the back corner of some store, and after reading the list of groups on it, I decided to buy it. This is a group of songs by variouse goth, darkwave, EBM, and industrial bands, but most of them are done in a death rave format. Now, if anyone tells you that this isn't goth, they obviously are not aware of what goth is. Goth music is not simply just a kind of music, but it is actually a group of musical styles that has branched off forming variouse kinds, such as goth-industiral, certain EBM, darkwave, ethereal and dark ambient to name a few. Anyway, back to the review, this compilation features many of the top names in the afor said styles. A great compilation for anyone who frequents death raves, or just enjoys electronically driven music.

This is the compilations to beat all other compilations. It's well worth the money. All of the songs are top notch by some of the best artists of the genre. Even if you have a lot of these songs already, you must get this for all the great remixes (Cruxshadows remixed by Apoptygma Berzerk is DIVINE).
This isnt something you can live without.
The first two discs are some great songs, and the thrid disc is an amazing non stop mix by DJ RiB. (who does great live DJ events too).
Don't pass this up!

5.0 out of 5 stars For fans of NeoGoth or Darkwave...This is it., June 23, 2006
This review is from: This Is Neo-Goth (Audio CD)
This album singlehandedly introduced me into a thrilling new genre. I'm very eclectic in my tastes, but I had no idea what I was missing before listening to NeoGoth. Being a NIN fan, I thought it might be worth buying, but MY GOD! It is fantastic! If you like any kind of techno, you may find something new here to appreciate.

If you are a neogoth/darkwave/dark electronic fan, you will definitely want this album. Even if you are an industrial/EBM fan, you may find that this album is worth your time. Yes, there are a few artists/songs on here that are gar-bahj. But altogether, it is wicked.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of the new wave in Gothic music., June 27, 2005
This review is from: This Is Neo-Goth (Audio CD)
After purchasing this set at my local music store, I gave it a good few listenings over the next week or so. What I had heard exited my senses and introduced me to several artists new to me and familiar artists given a new look by talented musicians. I enjoyed the variety of different EBM, industrial, and darkwave sounds that enthralled my brain in an orgy of different sounds sensations. I would recomend this to anyone wanting to get into new Goth music, other than the tradional artists of days past.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is just dance music, December 8, 2006

I bought this CD expecting to get a compendium of the hottest bands in a genre where each band sounds unlike every other band. Gothic music is, after all, about unique perspective and artistry. When I first decided to get this CD, it was a choice between it and a CD by Voltaire. I now wish I had gotten the Voltaire CD. Because this CD does not have Goth music on it.

Oh, the bands are Goth. But they've been remixed in such a way that they all sound alike. I had difficulty knowing without looking when one song ended and another began. Even the incredibly normally unmistakeable sound of the talented Cruxshadows was lost in the remix process.

I will give it this, though: the second and third CDs are better than the first CD. At least, it was easier to tell the songs apart. I give it two stars because it is okay music, if you like dance music, but this CD is NOT representative of the Gothic genre. If I had been able to listen to it before buying it, I wouldn't have. Very disappointing.
