5.0 out of 5 stars It sounds as good to me now July 25, 2014
By 80/81
Format:Audio CD
I have to disagree about how well this CD has aged. It sounds as good to me now, still relevant, still progressive, still as emotional, as it did when I first heard it in 1987. I came looking to see if if had been digitally remastered, but it looks like it has been long out of print. I am glad I still have my original copy. It is not particularly like Horvitz's later work which I also enjoy greatly. Definitely worth a listen if you can to decide for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars different but still excellent September 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD
love this one. it's different. Not his best but still great. I love tracks 4, 5, 7 and 9. The steel drum solo of the synth on 9 gives me goose bumps every time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Horvitz at his best November 12, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This CD has not aged well. The compositions are uniformly uninspired, the synth sounds have become dated, and nonesuch's production is borderline sterile. I'm a big Wayne Horvitz fan, so I DID give this CD many listens - many chances to find something hidden beneath the surface, but there wasn't much to find. I have most of his other work and I especially like him with any of his steady projects (e.g. The President, Zony Mash, Pig Pen), but his collaborators here (many who he works with often) offer little of interest.

As an experiment in over-produced, synth-driven jazz, this is an interesting relic of the time, but this is almost the *last* Horvitz CD you should buy - after you have all the others.

I should also note that I love vintage synthesizers. It's just that there were a few dogs out there during the rise of digital synths that have not stood the test of time and many of those sounds show up here. The recording might be more interesting if there was any dynamic range or sound outside of this highly compressed midrange. Greater sonic clarity would doubtlessly reveal some of the missing detail.

All that said, there are some cool moments. Just not enough for me to recommend this to anyone but the Horvitz fanatic who must have everything. Thankfully, I can highly recommend almost all of his other CDs!
