happened to see this at a bookstand at central park when we took our kids on their first trip to NYC. Was excited to buy this once we got back. I love this book, but for some reason my five year old doesnt, otherwise i'd give it 5 stars.

We got this book for our 3 year old when we were planning a visit to NYC. We used it to help teach her some of the sights she would see. She liked the illustrations and had a fun time finding all the places we had read about. I enjoyed some of the fun facts the book included.

This was just one of the few gifts my mother received on Mother's Day and she is majorly in love with it. She teaches preschool and loves New York so why not combine the two? Since the year is almost over, she plans on reading it next year to the kids when they study the letter "N". This book was written in the '60s, so I'm told, so a lot of things in New York have changed since then. Although this is true, it is still a great and fun book to read. It's like "Home Away From Home" for my mom. If you're a teacher, your kids will love this book! Such incredible illustrations!

It's definitely an older style of writing and illustration. We purchased the San Francisco book while we were there and my daughter loves the book. Figured we should get other cities we're familiar with.

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. it also makes me wish i could go back in time to see new york in this era.
and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the state...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the state WAS as well as the present day differences.
i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either new york, or simply in wonderful illustration.
