My elementary school library had seven of M. Sasek's "This Is" books. They were simply magical to me as a child. I used to always have at least one checked out. I believe I set a record for most consecutive weeks of having a single book checked out with "This Is Washington DC". I have since collected 17 of the 18 "This Is" books as an adult. They are still magical. The books portray an optimism that is missing in today's world. Sasek's beautiful artwork is bright and cheery. Anyone who is a fan of Mary Blair and her style of art would love Sasek's artwork. The books are just as enjoyable for adults as well as children. There is a ton of tongue-in-cheek humor that I never got as a child. The books are sure to strike the spirit of adventure for any youngster. I am looking forward to reading these books to my child when he gets old enough.

The amazing thing about "This Is New York" is that it still captures the spirit and vitality of New York today. It would make an excellent addition to any book collection, child or adult.

These books by Miroslav Sasek were possibly my most beloved books as a child. I am thrilled that 2 of the series are being reprinted. His illustrations are charming and timeless. I used to pour over these books wondering what these cities would be like. I'm hoping that This is Paris and This is London will follow.

This is a nice picture book for young children who love NY or for someone who loves NY to read to someone who doesn't know much about it.

Great book but a poor job of printing/scanning ("Printed in China"). My copy just arrived and all the images look washed-out, with blurry grays where there should be blacks. The copy I saw at the Tenement Museum bookstore in New York did not look like this. Very disappointing. Same for my copy of "This Is San Francisco" that was also part of this order. Bleh.

Sasek's classic works belong in bookstores right next to Tintin and Madeline and Babar. They are as informative as entertaining for children, and adults. I notice that Amazon lists quite a few Sasek titles: missing is This Is Venice and This is Texas. Anyone notice any other missing titles?

This is one of many travel books by Sasek. They teach children about great cities mostly by the delightful and humorous pictures. The pictures are colorful and cartoonlike, yet accurately and uncannily capture each city's unique qualities. I am interested in collecting the whole series in English.

I loved books as a child, but alas, I never owned this one. Yet even without the nostalgia, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it with adult eyes and the illustrations are captivating. I like that New York "is full of the Biggest Things" from "biggest Sunday papers" (it's true!) to "biggest traffic jams." Sasek's book takes kids from Harlem to Chinatown, and the very last page offers up-to-date facts. Great for little children. If your kids (or niece or granddaughter) are older (age 7 to 13), get her Melanie in Manhattan which is also set in New York -- my hometown -- and takes kids from Harlem to Chinatown with stops on the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge. I recently stumbled across this book in Sydney, Australia. Having never seen any of M. Sasek's books I was drawn to it instantly. The illustrations are beautiful. The text simple and engaging. Husband was just about to leave for a trip to New York so I purchased a copy to read to our 2 1/2 year old while dad was away. She loves this book! We have read it every night while dad has been away. Dad came home this morning with her very own statue of Liberty and Yankee's baseball cap. Dad read her the book again tonight with cap on head and Lady Liberty in hand. Wonderful book for even little ones to enjoy. Thoroughly recommend it. Have just ordered the rest of Sasek's This Is... series. Books to keep for a lifetime.

Exclamations come to mind: beautiful design and drawings, comprehensive and to the point guide! And this goes for all his city guides Paris, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong. You might argue it is a bit old fashioned, but I think you are confusing it with "it s one of the Classics". And when something is called a Classic, it is timeless and a Must-Have! Trust me, it is worth your while and money!

This is such a special book. We love and live in New York City and this is one of our favorite books about the city. It was written in the 50's so it is dated but that is what makes it sooo great! We don't even have kids but we have this book AND we give it to all our friends kids and they love it too!
