The New Improved Fabulous Thunderbirds, August 31, 2007
This review is from: This Night In L.A. (DVD Audio)
The sound is excellent, the picture is crystal-clear, the performers are healthy, buff, and Kim Wilson looks like he just bench-pressed 300 pounds of old blues records taken out of the trunk of B.B. King's Dyna-Flow, besides his being the best living blues harmonica player; but I have to tell you that something seems to be missing here. The old T-Birds, with Jimmie Vaughan, super-drummer Fran Christina, with his deep marching snare (and regular snare at the ready), and tragic heroin-addicted but brilliant bassist Keith Ferguson, just had more charisma, feeling, authenticity, and all of what distinguishes a great band from a merely good one. This new band is still better than 95% of the rest of what the record industry churns out; the guitarist has the right hair, Wilson has his show-biz moves down; yes, Kim, the new Mercedes looks great, rides smooth, and is a fine piece of machinery, but you made me fall in love with that old '55 T-Bird you used to drive back in the day.
